I appreciate the help you gave me on my desktop for malware removal. I was following the same procedure for another computer, a netbook, Asus EEE PC 1000HD, running Windows XP SP3. This computer has the Advanced Virus Removal malware as well. Everything from the Read and Run Me First was going fine, but I rebooted for the Sun Java update, and now, when I click on the user name to login to XP, the login starts, then logs off. I have tried booting from last known good config with no luck, also in safe mode, debug mode, all with the same results.

This is a friend of my wife's netbook, and she does not have the recovery disk. The computer did not come with one when she bought it. There is also no onboard DVD/CD drive. I have read elsewhere that this will boot from a USB drive, but what should I put on the USB drive???

Look forward to hearing from you!

    Thanks
    Rick

    I apologise for that :)

Please READ everything below before doing anything.

The first thing you want to try doing before things get any worse is to backup important data. The below CDs may help but you will have to get help in the Software Forum on using things like these since it is outside the realm of the Malware Forum to do this as we are too busy with actual malware removal.

If you can no longer boot your PC in either normal boot mode or safe boot mode, there is not much we can do for you to remove malware other than suggest you scan the drive by slaving it into another properly protected PC. Note that if you have a laptop, slaving a laptop drive requires special hardware so this may not be an option for you. Or another option is using another PC to make CDs like the below and use them to scan your PC:

    UBCD4Win 3.5.0

However, you may want to try the below if you have your Windows boot CD or the Recovery Console installed. This could possibly get your PC bootable again.

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting
