    Re: Malware removal logs

OK so the attached makes up the leftovers of the logs from my PC scans. Thanks again for any time spent looking into them.

Just as an aside, my home PC also had a program called Cain and Abel. Looks a bit ominous too...any thoughts? :cry

What are the contents of these directories?
    • c:\documents and settings\Peter\Application Data\gtopala
    • c:\documents and settings\Peter\Application Data\RegistryKeys

Tell me exactly or show me with a screenshot please?

I've atatched a screenshot of the first one 'gtopala' from Explorer. I have no idea what it is or what its used for.

Also have attached screenshot of the Registry Keys one. Same as the previous,; no idea what this is about. When I opened the folder (in the image attached), it had nothing in it. Any leads appreciated.

Do you ahve any info on the program Cain & Abel? Its on my home PC and I didn't put it there....Maybe my trouble and strife (wife) did!....:confused

    Just delete it then.

I cannot see what the name of the file is in the screenshot. Would you let me know?
Yes. It is a password recovery tool for Microsoft Operating Systems. It should appear in the add/remove programs/uninstall programs as Cain and Abel so just uninstall it if you're not using it. It's not really a tool to just play around with.

The name of the file in the Registry Keys file is Exception. The file in the gtopala file is attached in an expanded view. Think it is gtopala/siw/siw_init.xml

    Cheers and thanks.

You can delete this whole folder, reboot, navigate back to the location is was at and check it's really gone.

    c:\documents and settings\Peter\Application Data\gtopala

Could you please get this: Exception into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:

    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

Hi. I deleted the gtopala file and it appears gone. I tried the process you described below regarding zipping the Exception file but had no luck. (There wasn't a file or folder in C named 'collect.zip'

Didn't we delete this file (Exception) originally though? Mabe that's why it didn't work? Cheers again.

About ready to wrap up then. How are things running?

Running pretty good thanks. Although I have a small glitch that you might be able to help me with. When I try and open a hyperlink, an error message comes up stating that I don't have a program to open the file. I have been using the select from list function and choosing Internet Explorer or Chrome to get around it. Any ideas?

Best for you to post in the software forum regarding this.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
