Hello and thank you in advance...
I had an annoying popup on my home computer which was trying to trick me into installing a .exe program. I didn't let it install, but I've been trying to remove the popup and all its components so that it can't propogate. I ran the Windows XPCleaning Procedure and will attach those logs. I'm not hugely savvy in this area, so I'm hoping I've run everything correctly.

In a potentially ongoing-ly related matter, we were told at work today that there has been a small outbreak of some type of especially nasty virus (they did not tell us which) on several computers (we are on a server). I had experienced a similar popup there and after my normal scanning procedures didn't remove it, I told our IT person and he has handled it. I mention this because I am required to email myself things back and forth from home to work, so I want to make sure I'm safe on the home computer.

I ran the scans earlier and am hoping this is the correct MGtools log attached.

Thank y'all so much for volunteering your time on this site...

These logs are clean. I am not seeing any malware. There are however some miscellaneous items that we can address and also the current version of SAS that you have is out of date:

    1. Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

    2. If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    3. delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    4. Attach the new log from running SUPERAntispyware into your next reply.

I've done the scan and other steps you mentioned, and am attaching the log.

Prior to running the MajorGeeks Malware Removal steps I was experiencing these problems in addition to the frequent popups: When running any security program (AV or spyware detection), every scan was yielding no results. The night before visiting the MG site I ran some scan, and it found 22 infected Symantic AV files. Also I found 2 infected files in what looked like System Restore, and I believe that was through CounterSpy. I didn't write down that information and now do not remember what scans those were. Next I tried to update both Symantic AV and CounterSpy, and both were not completing their updates. CounterSpy let me download the update, but then wouldn't complete the installation and stopped working at all. AV appeared to just get hung up on the update. I noticed the next time I opened Symantec that some of the functions were not available; some of the tabs that are normally there were not showing up.

After running the Malware Removal steps, both started working again and the missing AV tabs showed up again.

Could you walk me through what I need to do to return the computer to normal working order, re: MS Config or Safe startup mode? I'm very fuzzy on that type of info...

    Thanks.

You should be in normal mode. Any other mode is for diagnostic and troubleshooting purposes only. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
