Hi, and thank you in advance for any help you may offer.

WinXP PC began to behave strangely yesterday, perhaps due to some questionable web surfing. Symptoms include: cannot open any programs but can look into directories, PC freezes, etc. Was running current NAV (i know this is not a recommended AV tool).

Have installed the tools and run the scans. After the first run-through of Malwarebytes and a reboot, I ran Ccleaner, RK and MWB again. Then proceeded with TDSSK, HMPro and MGTools.

Attached are the scans: RKreport[0].txt, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log,
TDSSKiller log, HitmanPro log, and MGlogs.zip.

I have 2 TDSSKiller logs and 2 RKreport(0) logs- attached are the most recent.

    Thank you for your time,

    Bruno (shredwood)

Did you run the scans in safe mode? What is wrong with normal booting>? Is it because no programs will open in normal mode?

    Try the below:

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop on the PC with the infection.

    • Open up this newly created folder and then open the "files" folder (...\windows repair v1.5.7\files)
    • From here, locate the fix_exe_hijack.inf file and then Right-mouse click it one time, then choose "Install".
    • Once you have done this, you should now be able to open applications again.

If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Re run Hitman and have it delete all of the Potential Unwanted Programs.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Explain what issues remain.

Safe mode because programs will not open after booting normally. Some programs will open in normal mode, sometimes. Unpredictable.

Will proceed with the suggestions now.

    In normal mode,
    Downloaded and installed fix_exe_hijack.inf,
    Removed Windows Messenger,
Ran Hitman - no threats found, 2 traces found,
    Machine hung so shut down.
Restarted in normal mode and successfully edited the registry!
    Shut down.
During shutdown process, saw some weird apps closing, like "hidden fax window"... also a bad kernel message just as the screen was closing.

Restarted and ran Windows Update to check Windows out. Windows Update hung up looking for updates. Tried to review update history which also hung up for many minutes with the hourglass pointer and had no result. Shut down Help and Support center as it was non-responding. Shut down again.
Restarted and ran some programs. Very sluggish, than stops running, so have to force a shutdown.

    Remaining issues include:
very slow to open any program, slow to run programs, hangs up once running a program for any length of time.

I look forward to hearing from you..

    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

    Any better at all?

    Things seem much better! :)

Ran the windows repair tool twice...

    Windows Update ran normally.

    Office programs open now.

However, Mail Client Thunderbird seems corrupted and will not open.

Just re-loaded the mail program, and it is running okay.

Is there anything further to do now?

Perhaps we are out of the woods. If so, thanks so much, and please refer me to the tips section on how to stay out of trouble going forward.

Where can we make a donation?

You can further discuss Thunderbird and other non malware related topics in the software forum. :)

That's lovely of you to offer a donation, we don't accept them per se though, we do however have a terrific little store where you can purchase some geek wear if you so desire. ;)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove them, you can delete these files now.
    3. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    4. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    5. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
