My cousin asked me to remove some malware from his Toshiba Laptop (running windows XP Home SP3.) As this is not my pc, I have no definite idea when these problems started or what may have been done to bring them about, but these are the symptoms that I have witnessed:

Upon loading the sole user account, a notification appears in the system tray stating that there is a security issue and asking to run an 'antivirus scan' by registering the program. If this is declined, a short while later a pop-up appears in the middle of the screen stating that there have been '34 malware infections found: clean or stay infected?'. If this is ignored, then another notification appears in the system tray stating that there is a current attack by bankerfox.a on a port (the port number being attacked changes every few notifications.) In addition to this, no programs or control panel applets may be run as a message pops-up stating that the *.exe file is corrupt. Also, every once in a while, internet explorer attempts to open a website unprompted (I have disconnected the laptop from the network) and it's always to a site dealing with viagra or pornography.

A few days ago, I had read the guide to Malware removal on these forums and figured they would be a good place to start. I downloaded all programs that were specified on a different pc and transferred them to the infected laptop via a thumbdrive. As I was unable to open or run anything on his user account, I ran the first two scans (SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes) from the administrator account in safe mode. I was unable to get ComboFix to work properly from safe mode, so I created another user account with administrator privileges and ran ComboFix, RootRepeal and MGtools from there. I will be posting the logs as replies. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Ahh, my apologies, I missed this earlier. What I need you to do is to abandon this new admin account you created, and focus on the affected one that you described to me.

So, from that account, let's do the following:

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif
Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then double click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Now download and Run exeHelper
    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. See if you can save a log with it.

Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools

Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:
    • C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
    • a log from online SAS scan if you could make one
    • log.txt - from exeHelper
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools
The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

Ok, sorry this took so long, but the scans are going slowly. I ran rkill.com and it worked (the first two options did not and the link to the fourth option resulted in a 404-Not Found message.)

I then ran the applications as you requested with just one small variance. I have found that I am unable to connect to the internet (whether this is related to the infection(s) or some other issue, I'm not certain at this point.) As such, I ran the installed version of SuperAntiSpyware (I hope that is okay.) SAS found 377 items: 356 counts of 'Adware.Tracking Cookie', 13 counts of 'Trojan.Agent/Gen-IEFake', 7 counts of 'Trojan.Agent/Gen-IExplorer[Fake]' and, lastly, one count 'Trojan.Agent/Gen-Virut.'

I am attaching the requested logs. After the reboot following the SAS scan, I am seeing none of the symptoms which I had initially reported. However, the laptop is still unable to connect to my home network (it stalls on the acquisition of the IP address) but as I stated above, that may be a completely different issue.

To begin with, please disable Spybot's TeaTimer.

    How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer

    Uninstall outdated Java

    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 17

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

What is inside of this folder?

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    • C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Jonathan Bennett\Local Settings\Temp

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    How are things running now?

  8. Badger of Honor

    Badger of Honor Private E-2

I ran all the above steps with success.

    The folder:
    C:\Document and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\boxcewcee is empty.

fixMe.reg was added to the registry successfully

I emptied the requested Temp folders.

I reinstalled Jave Runtime 6 after uninstalling the others.

I have attached the new MGlogs.zip

The laptop seems to be running fine now, I have regain network connectivity and have had no pop-ups, fake notifications, attacks or browser hijacks.

    Thank you so much.

    Then you can delete it.

    Delete the below folder too:
    C:\RECYCLER(2)

If you did not deliberately set this proxy yourself then please include it in the HJT fix below:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Badger of Honor Private E-2

Both folders have been deleted and the second attempt at repairing the proxy has been completed. Attached are the new MGlogs

    That's better.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    everything is better, thanks you!
