Malware/trojans and who knows what else

    A week ago while surfing on the internet, our computer screen showed a "security system" popup and when we tried to get out of it the screen went to a scanning/downloading "virus scanning program". After that screen was closed down, any link clicked after a google search would be redirected to a random website. The only way to get anywhere was to type in a web address. Also, tabs would open up on their own when in Internet Explorer and if we were on for a while security messages would start popping up.

    We use McAfee security software and the detection log showed something being allowed right before everything went nuts. I forgot to write it down and now I can't find where it shows up, but I think it was a file called "atapi". Also, when using the internet to try to fix the problems, McAfee would show that it was blocking a lot of things trying to get into the computer.

    I don't know much about this stuff and have spent the last week with different scanners and programs. At some point I also restored a file within McAfee - a "patched-SYSfile.a" was successfully restored in C:\Windows\System32\drivers. Nothing worked. I finally found your website and went through the process in the Malware Removal Guide. It seems like it might have worked, but I saw a few things in the scans that worried me. I thought I would post a thread and attach my logs so that someone who knows what they are looking at can tell me what to do. If that involves blowing the whole thing up - I'm game at this point!

    I will appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks!!

    1. If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    2. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    3. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    LiveUpdate

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "AlcxMonitor"=-

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix. and TDSSKiller.

    Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now! Are you still being redirected?

    Ok. I've:

    1) Removed Windows Messenger. After I finished the process, I got a message that the computer needed to restart/reboot in order to finish, so I let it.

    2) I ran MGtools\analyse.exe and Fixed those items. Once again, a message to restart/reboot in order to finish, so I let it.

    3) I had to download ComboFix again. I didn't get rid of it, but it wasn't there anymore. A McAfee scheduled scan ran last night and found a Combofix file that McAfee said was a trojan. McAfee showed that it repaired the file - maybe it got rid of it. Anyway, I downloaded ComboFix again and ran it with the CFscript.txt. I got a message that said it was unverified, but I told it to run. It ran with no problems.

    4) I an TDSSKiller with no problems.

    5) I ran MGtools\GetLogs.bat and got the following message:
    c:\Progra~1\Symantex\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed DLL initialization. Close to terminate program. But I chose Ignore, run anyway. It seemed to run just fine.

    I have attached the logs that you requested.

    The computer seems to be behaving. While on the internet, I am not being redirected and am getting no popups or new windows opening on their own. As I said earlier about ComboFix, my McAfee scan said it found a trojan that it repaired. Otherwise, the computer seems to be acting normally.

    Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Great! I have fixed the register and got a message that "...has been successfully entered into the register."

    Internet explorer and my computer don't seem to be having any problems, so I am in the process of doing the rest of the things on the list.

    I do have one more question. On the RootRepeal log that I attached at the beginning, it had an entry that showed a MBR Rootkit was detected in the K: drive. That is an external hard drive connected to the computer. Is that a problem that has been addressed or has it been infected and I need to do more to clean it?

    Thanks so much for your help!
