Malware/Virus problem?

I have a problem computer that someone brought into the shop today for virus removal. When I boot up all of the icons are there but have been replaced with the icons that you get when it ask you what program you would like to open it with and nothing happens when I click on them. Internet explorer is the only one that works and I can surf the internet but cant install anything not even activex controls. When I click on my computer I get a blank search for files and folders screen and can do nothing. Can not even run files from cd or thumb drive. I get the same thing as I get with the computer icons. I have taken the hard drive out and scanned it with another computer and it found nothing with etrust,bitdefender,microsoft antispyware,spybot,adaware, and panda. No online scanners will work since it wont install anything. I have also tried using the repair feature on the windows xp cd and still no change. Any ideas???

 

Download the file below, save to desktop. Once download is complete right click and extract the contents.

Double click to run and click yes if it ask to merge. Reboot and see if problem remains.

Does not work. File associations dont work. cant install anything.even after I download I still get the same type icons. I can see them but cant open them. When click on them they seem to turn transparent. Right click doesnt give me the option to extract or open them. This happens even from usb drive and cd. I can do nothing.

 

I can still see traces of spysheriff and other possible malware/viruses but it seems as if they have delivered there payload and are now gone. I see stuff like this every day at my job but not quite this bad or difficult to figure out. Has anyone had anything similar to this. Remember that I can do nothing from within windows except surf the internet. Cant install or open anything or run online scans.

 

Do a "repair" and then try to begin the cleaning process. You must get the FA so you can run scans.
