A friend of mine called me up to help with their computer. The initial symptoms were that it was extremely slow, kept opening a ton of pop-ups, wouldn't allow them to open any programs, and the dreaded Antivirus XP 2008 windows kept popping up and blocking everything although the associated background never showed up thankfully.

I have managed to eliminate AV XP 2008 and the malware that was causing *most* of the pop-ups. Doing so has gotten it so that I can at least open programs and do most things but there are still some issues. It is still opening a few pop-ups, even trying when the computer is not online (network cable disconnected). It will let me into most programs but about 75% of the time it randomly closes them. It also seems as if something is hijacking the browser, I can run a search and get the same hits as I get on my laptop but when I try to go into a page, it pulls up a different page, generally one advertising anti-spyware/anti-virus software or one for videos.

I've attached my most recent HJT log.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

OK, NOW I have run the full READ & RUN ME FIRST section like I should have done before. Sorry about that! My logs will be posted in the next couple of posts.

I am still getting pop-ups although it's not as many as before. I am also getting Norton window that keeps opening up, telling me live update has encountered an error. I have attached a screenshot of this. I have not run the fix tool that it asks me to run. They did not have any virus protection on this computer until after the issues started, then they bought Norton IS 2008 and put it on. I'm thinking I may need to uninstall and reinstall it since the computer was already infected when they put it on. Suggestions?

I am also getting a strange popup on the desktop. It comes up every few minutes, always advertising for a different place. It does not show on the task bar when it's up, has no X to close it, and it goes away on it's own after about 10 seconds. I have also attached a screenshot of it.

About half of the time I am still getting an error when I open IE. There message is "Internet Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close". When this happens I can immediately open it back up and it seems to be fine from then on.

I've been just randomly using the computer for the last hour to see if I notice anything else unusual. I haven't made any changes except running a defrag with Smart Defrag.

I don't seem to be getting the IE error now, it's loading and working as it should.

Most of the remaining issues (aside from the popups) seem to be related to Norton IP. When I reboot the computer, I get a message saying "ccSvchost" is shutting down. As far as I can find out, that process is related to Norton. The computer is still a little slower to restart than I think it should be but I haven't even looked at the startup files yet so it could be that. But when the computer restarts I get a message saying "You have turned off your antivirus protection. Your system may be more vulnerable to viruses and intrusions." I am getting this even though Norton is turned on (everything except Phishing) and appears to be working except the liveupdate as noted before.

Last night I went ahead and downloaded the patch Norton was asking me to. That seemed to fix all of the rest of the problems I was having. No more pop-ups, no errors, everything working great. Many, many, thanks to those of you who started this forum and who take the time to help others by sharing your knowledge!

Based on the last logs you attached, there is a lot more malware to remove. So let's continue.

    Uninstall Viewpoint Media Player

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {D7F30B62-8269-41AF-9539-B2697FA7D77E} - (no file)
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: ezqdvv.dll

NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
