malware w/ unwanted browser popups

About a week ago I stumbled onto an unfamiliar website and immediately noticed unwanted popups on my browsers. This would occur while using either Firefox 3.6 (the default) or Chrome. My cpu is a Pentium, running XP Pro SP3.

I was unable to clean this using first a pre-existing install of a free McAfee bundle from Comcast or later with AVG Internet Security 9.0. After the AVG cleaning, I started getting a "runndll" error message on boot-up saying that hovogove.dll" could not be found, but I continued to see the browser pop-ups.

I have gone through all the cleaning procedures in correct order and believe that the obvious problems were cleared up after running ComboFix. I have run through the rest of the scans and the only remaining issues that have gone "off-script" are:
    1. MGTools "sysrest.txt" file is empty
    2. The zip file that MGTools was to have created did not occur.
These two issues continue even after downloading and running "XPproFix" (XPProfiles.exe).

I've attached the log files from the 1st four routines and will wait to hear what to do about the missing MGTools zip. Is it "safe" to use the machine in the meantime?

Are you getting an error message when you run MGTools.exe? What exactly is it.

Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The red is merely informational.

cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

I ran the two batch files and didn't get any error messages.

The two log files are attached for your reference.

Please advise if further action is necessary.

    Thanks!

Where did you put MGTools.exe? It is not showing on your C:\ drive as it should be.

Please use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\bekeyara
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\0ce66436-8926-4c26-99a2-0f1ca6e3ce97
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\0fb065ad-0a01-4511-b253-925dd97b4021.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\382a1638-8b17-45a4-8e7b-a39106960d65.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\62b6d64f-c37d-4189-a760-6c51f8b16cb3

    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\9bd76e77-de53-477e-b452-a263fec51bc6
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\a3aeb55b-aaa9-49ed-b96e-71b08cdd2da6

    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\is26.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\is28.tmp

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

The requested MGLogs.zip file is attached.

Looks good, you just need to use windows explorer and delete these:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\1d2c282d-e267-408a-b85c-9668225aaf26
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\4a934f41-27b1-44dd-9b45-8a24467bbc48
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\d9d02815-5f81-49dc-8ea7-4172d10cc801

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to tahe cleaning procedures ian step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hello Tim,
Everything has gone according to plan, with one (I think? minor) exception.

RE: Step #6, Hijack This uninstall: I got an "Uninsaller Error" with the message: "An error occurred while trying to remove Hijack This 2.0.2. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove Hijack This 2.0.2 from the Add or Remove programs list?"

Please advise whether or not this is a concern.

    Thanks!

It should not be a concern, but you can check in CCleaner if it is still listed and allow it to be removed from your Add/Remove program list.
