    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

      Notes:
    • If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode
    • If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Uninstall the below software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_15
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 <-- this is an old version
Mininova Toolbar <-- not recommended as it may track you and changes your default searches. See this: http://www.castlecops.com/tk42624-tbMini_dll_tbMin0_dll_tbMin1_dll.html

Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Dont know its relevant but the last few days before I went through your latest instructions the machine froze 2 or 3 times generally whilst running Internet Explorer.

    many Thanks for your help.

One of the drivers we were trying to remove did not get removed. Let's try this another way.

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to DNS Client
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe which is really HijackThis, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteDnscache into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT and reboot if it tells you it needs to.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Hmmmm! That still did not work. There must be a problem with how this is entered in the registry or with ownership of the registry keys themself.

Please download Registry Search (see the link titled RegSearch Download Link )
    • Extract the files from Regsearch.zip into a folder.
    • Doubleclick regsearch.exe to start the program.
    • Enter Dnscache in the top area of the form and then click "OK".
    • Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file named RegSearch.txt will be saved in the program's folder as well). Attach this file immediately before doing the below.
Now do the same type search but this time search for userenv.exe
    Attach this second search log.

Hi files attached, can I ask and please excuse my ignorance, so far, what is it exactly we've got rid of? was any of it really bad? and what is it we seem to be struggling to get rid of now? The 2nd seemed to overwrite the 1st when I attached, so re-ran and named them 1 and 2, trust this is ok?

    Thanks

We are trying to get rid of the rest of the trojan infection that you have. It still has a service entry on your system. All trojans can be bad.

Now I see why we were having a problem removing it. They embedded a space at the end of the driver name to make it more difficult to remove. Obviously when you list this out or see it in most logs, you just would not notice a space at the end of a name.

Now let's see if we can get it removed.

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixDNSC.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files".
    • Please go to this link:http://live.sysinternals.com/
    • find the psexec.exe file listed in the list and click on it and download and save it to your Desktop. Doing this properly is critical for other steps below.
    • Now click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window with a prompt that shows the current folder you are in.
    • For you the prompt should show C:\Documents and Settings\User>
    • Now type cd Desktop and hit the enter key. There is a space after the cd.
    • If you do this properly, your prompt will change to C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop>
    • Type the below bold text and hit the enter key. This will open the Window Registry Editor. You will have to agree to the SysInternals License Agreement first that pops up.
      • psexec -s -i regedit
    • In the Registry Editor click File, Import and then navigate to the fixDNSC.reg file on your Desktop from the previous fix and double click on it to import it into your registry. If it works properly you should get a success message.
    • If you get a success message continue on with the below, otherwise stop and explain to me any problems you had.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi

File atatched as requested, observation as I went through your instructions, to import the fixDNSC.reg file I had created I had to access my desktop via documents and settings then user then desktop, clicking the desktop shortcut on the left side of the import window through up an error message saying desktop was nt there. also I had to change file type to all files to see the .reg file once I was in the desktop folder. Despite all this a success message did come back.

    Your log is finally clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
