malware

Well, looks like I have enlisted in the ranks of soldiers combating(sp?) malware. I hope my humble fighting techniques (knowledge) will help out in this area.

I'm just going to have to get use to doing the MG's way of combating malware, and not TF's way of devastating malware.

There are a couple different ways this is handled. You can either contact chas and be tested to see if you have the knowledge needed to assist at which point a decision would be made. Or if someone shows (from posting in the other tech forums) that they have the knowledge (accuracy counts!), ability, dedication, time and willingness to help we may approach them about helping out. There really is a great deal that enters into it..you have to also be fair, willing to accept constructive criticism/corrections along with the ability and willingness to readily admit if you made a mistake if you did and do so without getting your nose bent out of joint....etc...etc..there are many aspects we look at but that should give you a general idea.

I would love to join the ranks........but I must admit I am a little intimidated.

I know this sounds silly, but is there a pre-test to help me learn what I need to "study?" I so want to help out but don't know where to begin aside from following the other Malware Fighters. Just wondering how I can prepare for Chas and his test.

When I follow Chas, I am in awe. No other way to put it. Chas is awesome!!!!!!!!! I always thought of myself as a software man but seem pale in comparison to the members I see here so often. Thus, the intimidation. I am even somewhat leery of contacting Chas. I don't know the lingo but do know the "fixes" a little bit.

I have helped a few people I know personally (and one clled me a God after explaining to him how to fix his computer), thanks to MG, but otherwise feel belittled next to Chas, Theefool, D3m3nt3ed, and others.

Oh, and the one who called me a God I simply referred to MG, giving you lovely people the credit, along with his "crew." If he, or they, are here I would be proud to be the one who simply showed them the map so they could get here.

Please respond. Oh, and I am deeply sorry for past mistakes. I have nothing but respect for the beautiful people who are members, and run, this site. I have helped so few here but want to help more. I just do not want to "mess up" any more.

@ liberalghost You have nothing to apologize for so don't sweat it. We don't hold grudges or fault members for past mistakes or errors in judgment unless it's a routine thing they keep repeating...everyone makes mistakes..even mods/admins.

As for your desire to assist this is what I suggest to anyone interested and what you have already done somewhat. Follow chas around. Point blank, I know of no one on the net that can compare to his knowledge and skill in the fight against maleware. This is not meant to discredit anyone else that helps but the mans a genius IMO when it comes to this stuff.

Here are some very basic steps you can take to help you learn when following one of the threads that chas is working.

- Read the members initial post and give it some thought. Member may need to just be pointed to one or more of the sticky threads to get them started. Just determine for yourself where they are in the process and go from there.

- When the member posts specifics or feedback about their results from completing the read me...don't move on in the thread to see how chas is handling it right away. Carefully go through the members post and decide how YOU think it should be handled THEN see what chas has to say. Were you accurate in how you thought it should be handled? Did you miss some steps or key points in the members post?

Doing the above repeatedly is a good way to learn the ins and outs of the clean up process, new variants of malicious infections, etc. It's important to follow the threads from start to finish to get the most out of it. Keep doing this...the knowledge and know how doesn't happen over night...it takes time and energy...can be confusing and frustrating at times. You have to have a genuine desire to do this...enjoy the challenge and not be in it for the so called 'status'. If you are only in it for the glory then you will likely burn out fast and not be of any real help to yourself or others in the long run.

To sum it up...if you want to learn you have to take the bull by the horns and study diligently! Once you feel you are at a point that you could in fact meet the basic requirements send chas a PM.

I will definitely take the adive because to this point I was racing to see how Chas handled it. And I agree, Chas is awesome to wach. The others are pretty darn good too and I do not mean to take anything away from them.
