    Hello Everyone,

I've been trying to help a friend fix her XP SP3 computer and am stuck. It all seems to originate form a virus she got when she tried to update to a fake Internet explorer 11 that messed up MBAM where it wouldn't launch, disabled system restore and MSconfig, and causes IE to stop working. I decided to uninstall and reinstall MBAM but I always get a cocreate error after it installs and then it tries to launch and I get the Run Time Error 372. Now her shortcuts don't work, and I had to repair her MS Office 2003 due to some corrupt files.

I've tried so many things, and I'm still stuck.
    MBAR (rootkit)
    Adwcleaner
    combofix
    cureit
    JRT

Now after removing some viruses, her shortcuts do not work and MBAM still has the same error. So I'm ready to start over and would really value your help please! I've run the recommended programs in the order you specified (except MBAM because it doesn't work) today and have attached them.

    Thank you in advance,
    DR

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

There are no signs of any remaining malware. You will probably have to go to the Software Forum for help in repairing the Windows issues that remain. Have you tried fixing the shortcut file association? Have you checked the contents of the shortcuts to make sure they are correct? Have you tried making new shortcuts to one or two programs to see if new shortcuts will work.

Also you could try using an older system restore point from before where the problem began. I see a lot of available restore points in your logs going all the way back to 12/3/2013

Hi Chaslang, thank you so much for your reply!

I've tried a couple of shortcut fixing tools, and they didn't seem to help. I can't remember, which ones since I don't have access to her computer right now. I tried creating new shortcuts and they didn't work, even though the direct file launched (e.g. the newly created, by me, Word shortcut didn't launch, but if I went to the program files folder and launched it, it would open). Even the show desktop in the quick launch doesn't work either. Quite strange.

Previously, system restore did not work, but maybe I will try it again since I've managed to gain some control and functionality back with some updates.

Thank you again for your response, I'm glad to know there are no more infections present (I did something right :)!

    You're welcome.

Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
Now for the heck of it, try the below.

    Download LNK association fix here

    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/linkfile_fix.zip

Extract and launch registry key and click YES

Restart the PC and see if anything has changed.

Also try the below fix for you Malwarebytes problem. It is possible that the permissions fix item may also help with LNK files too.
