I was having a problem with audio advertisements just starting up on my computer. After reading the information on the site it seemed Malwarebytes was something I would do well to download. My impression was this was a free service....I thought I saw it on the top free downloads list but apparently this is not the case. Anyway, ran the initial scan and if flagged quite a few things and then I have requested they be removed. My question is should I purchase this or is this not necessary. This is not directly related to the the thread title but I have been familiar with Majorgeeks for a number of years but for some reason never really downloaded anything. It seemed so intimidating. Call me stupid but I for some reason find it challenging to navigate and I don't want to make unnecessary posts because there seems to be an emphasis on refraining from such posts. Needless to say, it keeps me from using the site, which seems to have so much potential for help. Is there a location in the site where I can freely interact with other members and gain guidance of how to best use the site without flagging the ire of adminsitrators. I have a lot of questions and I want to make the most of the site. In fact, I'm uncertain as to how I'm even how this post will work or how I will receive feedback. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi.:)

There is no need to be intimidated by our site. We are all very friendly here and are more than willing to help people of all levels of knowledge.

The software that is hosted here on our downloads page is tested by the two owners of Major Geeks and is clean. :)

Now, on to your original questions:

Malwarebytes is free as a scanning tool only. If you would like to use it as a Real time protection tool (similar to the antivirus software you hopefully have installed that protects you), you will have to pay for it. I would definitely suggest doing so. It's a good antiMalware program and is used by many people on here in conjunction with their AntiVirus software.
You do not have to purchase it to have it fix what it found, so I would suggest allowing it to do so. I would also highly suggest, if it did find a lot, that you run through our malware removal procedures here: READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide (incl. spyware, virus, trojan, hijacker) and then post your logs in a new thread in the Malware Removal forum.

Again...you really don't need to feel intimidated. Everyone is more than happy to help when they can here.

A couple good rules of thumb here when posting: 1. Don't post in someone else's thread if you are asking for help. You should always start your own new thread. 2. Be as thorough as possible about the question you have. People can't actually see your machine, so you have to let them know what Operating system you are using and exactly what problems you are having...including any errors, or error codes that pop up.

Just post in the forum that best describes your problem (ie. Software, Hardware, Drivers, Malware). If you don't know if it's the right forum, just post where you think it would be and we can always move it if it needs to be moved.:)

Don't worry, we don't bite....much. :-D ;) I'm kidding...the only way to flag the ire of anyone is to not treat people with respect. Based on this post, I don't think you'll have any issues with that. :)

    Ask away!

    HI

Actually any part of the site here at Majorgeeks is fine for you to post in as TBH while we may initiate military law and get folk to drop and take 20, in essence we are a friendly bunch of geeks who just want to help folk make the most out of their PCs and computing as a whole.

I have to say Laura's post above is perfect and al I would say and more, so follow that and you will be fine but if you have any PC questions, do not ever think they are silly or not worthy, please post them as we all have to learn so-how and a question not asked os a question missed.

I believe Malwarebytes is offering a free ten day trial when installed, after that you can still use the scanner but no real time protection. We use Firefox here, mostly. There is an addon called quickjava that allows to easily turn on or off Flash Player, Java, Java Script Silverlight etc... that should stop the sites from using FlashPlayer until you decide to, but you will need to refresh the page to make it so. Malwarebytes is still a great program, but weather to purchase or not is up to you. It does pick up the slack that most antivirus programs leave. Superantispyware is another decent program as well, I use it on occasion as a supplement to MAB.

I run free Malwarebytes on 2 computers and the paid version on our three main surfing computers. (2K, XP and 7)
Either would be fine. If you surf a lot and want to remain free, IMHO, malware is one of the best programs to run and well worth the cost.

I totally agree w/plodr regarding the value of using the Malwarebytes "pro" version... ;)

Although I generally like using 'freeware' alternatives, I did not mind ponying up to the $24.95 for the professional; especially considering (1) the $24.95 covers a lifetime of updates (2) the program can be set to silently be updated every single day (3) I frequently test new freeware full programs as well as utility software; so I therefore really need to have an up-to-date, safe-to-use and very reliable malware-fighter installed on my computers. For a while there I also used to use Spybot S & D freeware (which I no longer recommend) as well as the "paid version" of Spyware Terminator.

However, I have more recently used the Malwarebytes "Pro version" very successfully (but the freeware version is also good for most users as well). It works really wonderfully and has served me well for a while now. I actually test freeware programs as a hobby on the side; and I probably download and install up to a dozen or so of new full applications and/or utility programs to test out each month so I have to be very careful about picking up unwanted malware along the way. Previously I also tried using superAntispywarePro however it did not pickup all the spyware that the Malwarebytes freeware version found the very first time I tested it out.

And after I upgraded to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware pro; it has consequently already caught about a dozen or so 'baddies' while I was trying to test the new freeware programs onto my computer as well as warning me while I was downloading some of the installation .exe files for the new programs. Another nice thing it that it detects many seemingly innocuous adware programs that many other anti-malware programs do not. It then lists them and offers a 'right-click' link option which leads to a more thorough explanation of what they are, what they do as well as describing how dangerous (or docile) they are and then offers the option to remove them or not to.

    Good Luck! -- COMP
