"Manage add ons" in IE tools menu is disabled

Hi everybody:wave When I open IE, it does not go to my home page but instead I see a screen with the following message,
" Internet Explorer is currently running without add-ons

All Internet Explorer add-ons, such as ActiveX controls or toolbars, are turned off. Some webpages might not display correctly.
To continue to your home page, click the Home button.
To browse using add-ons, close Internet Explorer and then start it again.
Check for the latest Windows updates.

When I restart IE the screen changes a little and asks me if I want to check for ActiveX updates. I click on the link to check for updates and It tells me I need ActiveX to view the page. It seems as though I need ActiveX in order to obtain ActiveX. I should note at this point that IE has only started this behavior since I performed the actions in the removing malware thread day before yesterday 01/24/08. Any Thoughts?

 

i've seen this before and the problem was the desktop icon.

try running IE from the start menu instead and see if that solves it.

 

Hi wildwolf220! Thank you very much for the reply. I tried using the start menu but no luck. It even says "Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).Inc". I don't know whats going on. IE works when I preview my HTML pages but not any other time. Any other thoughts? Thanks, Cmdr Chill
