Mass Rename utility

I'm looking for a freeware util. that will easily allow me to select a bunch of files and RENAME them as "TEXT OF MY CHOOSING then NUMBER"
Example: I have a a bunch of pictures of cats with different file names: I want to select all these pix and rename them as "Cats(with the first picture renamed as 'Cats001; the second pic as 'Cats002, etc.)".
I hope you get my meaning.

How about writing a code snippet in visual basic for applications (vba)? You would need to make use of the File System Object.

Do you have Microsoft Office installed?

Or you could google "mass file rename utility" and go from there.

I am using an older version of the one presently available and it works fine although the interface is a bit weird.
