im not looking for removal help just yet, as im still working on the R&R walkthrough, but this all started as spyquake and using bout spybot and and ad-aware, i was finding various trojens (downloader.zlob or trojen.zlob) and other nasty stuff. (ishost, ismini, and other nasty prosseses that would just reload when shut down) anyways for a couple hours i thought i had got rid if this crap, but it started comming back again. after serching for more info i found smitrem and used that, but it did not help. as of now the initial bad stuff (ishost and all that) no longer appears but im still having problems. ive started to see a plethora of trojens, loggers, hijackers (coolwebserch) and other various nastys showing up on spybot serches and virus scans. anyways more to the point, i started on the R&R like you have advised to do, but one thing is preventing me from proceeding. i cannot preform a normal boot, because i cannot shut my computer off properly (i.e. cannot save the msconfig settings without a proper reboot) im sure it has something to do with my infestation, but i have win2k and for a while now when i try to log off, shut down or reboot the computer it hangs and finally crashes with a stop error (cant remeber the code, but complains about software and hardware installation) how should i proceed from here? Edit* this shutdown problem happens even in bare bone (no extras) safe mode.

Just run the READ & RUN ME steps in what ever boot mode you can run them in. For the logs from GetRunKey, ShowNew, and HijackThis, they are 10 times more useful if obtained from normal boot mode.

ok i managed to get a normal boot, and have completed the R&R. ive ran both the special instructions for smitrem and vundofix (found it on a serch) and will post the logs. after that i went through the R&R and will post the logs as well

No wonder you are so badly infected:
    • you have no antivirus
    • you may have had no antispyware protection until you ran the READ ME
    • you have no firewall
    • you are running Kazaa the plague of the internet.
Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
    Kazaa Lite 2.7
    Kazaa Lite K++ v2.4.2
    Kazaa Lite Resurrection 0.0.7.5
    Kazaa Lite Resurrection 0.0.7.6 F
    PeerGuardian 2.0
    Safety Bar

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Did you copy this C:\WINNT\system32\msconfig.exe from a WinXP system to use on your PC? If not, then delete it.

Start by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

IMPORTANT: You should print or save the below locally, so you can refer to them while offline. You must exit all browsers before running the below steps and it would be best if you actually physically unplug your cable to the internet, reboot, and do not run anything but what I give you to do. Also it would be good to exit all processes and items in your System tray.

Do the above before continuing! Okay unplug your cable now.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of winsys2freg.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the winsys2freg.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above step for the below DLLs (If you do not find the dll, just continue on):
    winpdc32.dll
    instcat.dll

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of winsys2freg.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above step for the below DLLs (If you do not find the dll, just continue on):
    winpdc32.dll
    instcat.dll

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6AD7BAE3-C719-ACE4-74BB-04C0250F19DD} - C:\WINNT\system32\abbweyl.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [aroxbbl.dll] C:\WINNT\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINNT\system32\aroxbbl.dll,kargzxd
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: instcat - C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\instcat.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winpdc32 - winpdc32.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winsys2freg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\winsys2f.dll (file missing)
    O21 - SSODL: nSMXaGgAAn - {7850AF7F-D2FA-05D5-5EF8-F42E85BE5A91} - C:\WINNT\system32\ljlbbct.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{7850AF7E-02C9-1033-1016-010401040001}\Update.exe
    C:\WINNT\system32\adirss.exe
    C:\WINNT\system32\aaDisabled.exe
    C:\WINNT\system32\actskn45.ocx
    C:\WINNT\system32\abbweyl.dll
    C:\WINNT\system32\aroxbbl.dll
    C:\WINNT\system32\haspvdd.dll
    C:\WINNT\system32\instcat.dll
    C:\WINNT\system32\mitjpsmd.dll
    C:\WINNT\system32\12A.tmp
    C:\WINNT\system32\2.tmp
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).
If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.
After reboot locate the below folder and delete it if found:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{7850AF7E-02C9-1033-1016-010401040001}

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\vashts\Local Settings\TEMP

Now attach a the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

ok, after following your info things are running alot better. i no longer get the stop errors on shut down, and my internet connection no longer seems to be bogged down. as of yet i havent receved any redirectons or popups

i did delete msconfig, as i did not copy it from winxp, but i did download it directly from microsoft. i used it to manage startup processes. can i get the winxp version that you are referring to from microsoft download? (should i use it at all?)

next subject, proctection. no i havent had a true antivirus program for a long time. i ran spybot and ad-aware on a regular basis though (though i was lax on updates)

question is what programs should i use? is there a good resource frendly solution out there on a budget (i would rather not have a bunch of extra processes running all the time as i have found with most antivirus/internet protection programs take nortons or even counterspy for example)

i do not have a personal firewall, but i am behind a router proxy. once again, are there good resource frendly personal firewalls out there?

here are the new logs. thanks much for the timely help

MSconfig was never meant to be run like that. It was only meant to be used as a temporary debugging tool. Try this Startup CPL and see how you like it.

Those are only scanners. They provide no active protection unless you use Spybot's Teatimer which we don't really recommend since it had been problematic in the past.

Answered further down in final procedures.

You still need a Software Firewall (also covered in the below).

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    3. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    4. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
