    Hello

I got my cousin in-laws computer, which she continues to get all jammed up. I ran the scans. I also saw something funny during boot up. I only saw it once and haven't seen it since the scans. Instead of saying windows home edition, it said windows professional. Now that the scans were done, I get 3 error messages about not able to find explore exe, and two other exes. After pressing okay, it continues to boot up as usual. But so far, it is running well. In addition, I had to run super antispyware scans at least 4 times, as the pc crashed on the first 3 attempts. I will attached the first and last logs from the supare antispyware scans. Here are the scans. Thanks a lot.

additional scans. Root repeal did not work. I got the following message:

Cannot read boot sector. Try adjusting the Disk Access Level in the Options dialog.

    DeviceIoControlError! Error Code=0xc0000000001

Your Malwarebytes log indicates you did not fix what it found. Since there is a new version out, let's be safe. Run it again and first select Update and update to the new version. Then run a new scan. Make sure you fix everything BEFORE saving a log. Then save the log and attach it to your next message.

Why is this PC being used with no protection software installed? No wonder it is so badly infected. In fact it may already be too late as some of your system files are showing up with incorrect sizes; however, it is possible this is due to having such an outdated copy of Windows XP installed. You only have SP1. This is a major security risk and this PC due to having no protection and an outdated OS is going to get infected again and again unless you update and install protection.

    However, let's continue for now.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix again.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now go here Windows Update and get this PC updated to Windows XP SP2 to start with. SP3 can be done later.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I did all the updates. I had to manually update to SP2. here are the logs. Everything seems to be much better. When running MGTools, I received an error message about (ProcessDll.exe) when HiJackThis was about to run. Also, I re ran the malware and still nothing was found. I can attach that log again. I also do not get the error messages during the boot up. I still have to install a firewall and antivirus, but I guess I will wait until you give me the okay.

    Thanks a lot.

Okay that is much better. Your logs are clean, but you still probably have dozens of Windows security updates to install (I'm not even including XP SP3 or IE7 or IE8 updates in that list). You need to get your updates. Many infections, including Conficker, will take advantage of a PC that is not properly updated. All of the below needs to be completed quickly.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix and C:\QooBox folders from combofix (if it exists and note that you may need to substitute a different drive letter than C: if you have Windows installed on a different drive.)
      • Also delete the below two files that are left behind by ComboFix, some scanners falsely detect these as problems which they are not:
        • C:\WINDOWS\NirCmd.exe
        • C:\WINDOWS\PEV.exe
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Okay. I tried to resolve this issue on my own, but was unsuccessful. Remember when I told you that I had to manual download SP2 when updating? I tried to make additional security updates but received an error message. I followed the instructions on the website below:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968001

but I was not allowed to edit my registry, even under my administrative account and safe mode (can I even edit registry in safemode?). I believe I can go straight to downloading SP3; however, i read another thread, which I do not have the link to anymore, that stated that I may have a similar problem if I download SP3. As you will see on the link, there are several registry items in that Senslog folder. There are currently none in mines. In addition, the microsoft works programs (the word processor, calculator, etc.) do not work as well. So, I didnt want to proceed without doing the updates first, as stated on the link.

So, should i just download the SP first, than follow the rest of the protection guide?

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I continued working on the issue. I was able to gain access to editing the directory. In addition, I saw a couple of links that suggested that I rename my registry. I even called microsoft, who did not know how to fit it (outservice to an Indian man who was quick helpful and friendly). I am going to follow the instructions from a thread that suggested that I rename one of the folders in my registry. The guy said it is a quick fix to a problem that microsoft does not know how to solve. Thanks again for the help, as I will also seek the help of those in Software.
