Okay, I'm having trouble with playback on some HD videos. It shouldn't be a hardware related problem because I can play some 1080p videos fine, but others (even in 720p)are really jerky. It's not like too slow jerky.. the picture will just freeze for 15-20 seconds while the audio continues. I'm at a loss because it only occurs with some videos, and other videos of the same format (usually x264) play fine. And it doesn't seem to be a problem with the actual video because it doesn't freeze in the same place every time.

I've updated all of my codecs (K-Lite 4.0) and my video card drivers (Radeon 9800pro) and the problem still persists. It's really annoying because I can still watch the videos if I pause every time it freezes it will catch up and work fine for another 30 seconds or so.

I'm using Media Player Classic, I tried Windows Media Player 10 and it still freezes up.

Just to be sure it isn't hardware related open task manager while the video is playing and make sure the CPU isn't being maxed out.

Other than that all I can suggest is trying a different player GOM or VLC to see if they play nice with the particular vids.

CPU's not maxed.. it hangs around 70%.

    I'll give VLC a try..

70% shouldn't be an issue. I've only had a few MKV's so it might be something specific to the format. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :(

Same story with VLC, so it's not the player. It has to be something with the decoder, because it does the same with all output rendering types as well.

Well, I'm getting ready to upgrade my video card.. so maybe that will fix it. If not I might just format and see if that does the trick.

You may wish to try clearing the codecs and filters off of your system and installing fresh ones. Some possible solutions:

    Vista Codec Package
    (works on Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista)

I'm not very familiar with this one, but you could try it if you thought that it might fix your problem.

    Combined Community Codec Pack

This is the one I use. If you were going to use this, I would suggest downloading their "Insurgent" software to detect and remove other codec packs before installing their pack. This should help keep conflicts from occurring. Their pack includes Media Player Classic (though you can opt not to install it, since you already have it) and the Haali Media Splitter. Their version of MPC should have special configurations to allow Haali to parse MKV files instead of MPC's built-in code.

You may be interested in checking out AfterDawn.com's pages on the Matroska format for more information on how to play it.

    Good luck!
