I asked this question 6 months or better ago, and never got a good option, so I'll see if someone else can deal with it now. I have run this on several different systems with different versions of windows, and different ages. My less then 1 year old system only shows it as 32 GB in bios, now I know what you're thinking, you have the CL2 jumper in, nope I don't. I put it in to see what would happen and the same thing 32 GB. I said to myself, self you know maxtor has that big drive enabler program run that, it only sees it as 32 gb, run Maxblast 4 for windows, 32 gb, ok.... run maxblast with linux, ah ha 160 gb format, format re boot, 32 gb. As I said I tried this on several machines, so its not a bios issue, the system I am playing with it on now, is older however it just recognised an 80Gb drive with no problem. Let me know if you have any thoughts.

Maybe you accidentally enabled this feature.

Other possible causes (including the ones you already tried):
    Jumper settings
    Outdated BIOS
Improperly configured BIOS, make sure all hard drives are auto-detected and that LBA is turned on (if there is such an option in your BIOS)
Drive is FAT32. Although windows should read FAT32 partitions > 32Gb, it doesn't like it.

Assuming you still have that linux install, how does QTParted (pre-installed on some distros, e.g. knoppix) show the drive?

I definately need to spend more time exploring Knoppix, I never even knew that was there. It shows the drive at 148 GB and is allowing me to format as NTFS, however I don't know if XP will see the drive at 148 or go back to seeing it as 32 but I'll keep you posted.

ok this is really easy, manually configure the damn thing in bios. Make sure bios read it as LBA and make sure its on an ATA 100 cable
