Maxtor 6E040L0 Jumper Setting Question

I'm replacing a Maxtor 40 GB with a WD 160 GB. Since Seagate has purchased Maxtor, it is extremely hard to get clear information about jumper settings. I want to clone the system image from the Maxtor to the WD. Then remove the Maxtor.

To do the initial image cloning, WD Data Lifeguard Tool instructions say to set Maxtor as "Master with Slave." Problem is that Maxtor does not have that setting for jumpers. The only relevant settings (other than CLJ) it has are:
    - Master
    - Slave
    - Cable Select

It's between Master and Cable Select. Anyone have experience with this particular brand of drives? Any help is appreciated. Since the Maxtor is the only drive on the PC, I'm assuming it's already set as Master from the factory. Will simply attaching the new drive and setting it as Slave enable the drives to be recognized correctly and do a clone transfer?

For cloning: Set the Maxtor to master on the 1st IDE channel, and set the WD to master on the 2nd IDE channel.... each should be on its own cable for best results.
After cloning, move the WD back to IDE channel #1, and attach any optical drives to channel #2. Leave the WD set for master, it should be set for master from the factory.

Thanks, hopperdave2000, but there's only one IDE connector on the motherboard. The two drives must share the same cable.

Here's what I'm going to do. Set the existing drive as master on the master and connect it to the black end of the cable, set the new drive as slave and connect it to the gray end of the cable, and connect the blue end of the cable to the IDE connector on the motherboard. This setting should be correct. If the management system in windows doesn't see the new drive, I'll set each drive to cable select and cable the same way.

Yeah- your way will work just fine. Avoid using cable select unless it's a last resort; it's caused me trouble in the past.
