Maybe the wrong place

I'm having problems with MSN messenger. I've got Windows ME with cable modem and i'm trying to webcam and audio with my family. i'm able to webcam fine but i can't get the audio to work. been searching and reading on internet about this but no real solution. i've called MSN and earthlink (my ISP) but no luck. any thoughts are much appreciated!

 

Which of you (you or your family) is behind a router and/or firewall?

Unless you are using Upnp with the latest messenger, you have to open ports manually.

i just have a modem - unless the firewall is with the ISP people which they say is not a problem on their end. my family has disabled firewall. they are able to get it to work with other people (webcam and audio). is there a way i can open ports manually. i've heard that the audio on messenger is "random" ports so it's basically impossible to know which port(s). thanks.

 

To enable voice communications, make sure that outgoing TCP connections from port 6901 are enabled. Also enable UDP packets where either the source or the destination port is 6901.

To enable file transfers, enable both incoming and outgoing TCP connections to the 6891-6900 range of TCP ports. This allows each sender to perform up to 10 simultaneous file transfers. Note that if only TCP port 6891 is open, users are only able to perform one file transfer at a time.

To enable messaging, enable outgoing TCP connections to TCP port 1863.

Both parties must use the same version as well, I do believe. Same version and program. Despite similarities, Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger are not the same app.
