ok, my friends computers video stopped working.... she left her computer on... walked away for a few minutes came back and it was off.... when she turned it back on the video didn't work... so ive tried a few things and figured out its not the video card because the video card works in my computer... but i still can't get video on hers working... even when using a different video card... she has a gateway 500se pc..... im not sure if its her motherboard or what.... can anyone help?

Are you not getting any video at all, post screen, anything, does the harddrive spin up and sound as though its loading windows, have you tried a different monitor?

First find the cmos reset jumper switch it to pins 2-3 for 5 secs then back to 1-2 to clear the cmos you might get lucky,if not,you just need the computer to post, remove any add in cards, harddrives, cdroms, you just need the cpu,one stick of good memory and the video card if you could use a stick from your computer that you know is working that would also be helpfull and try and fire it up,if it post replace the harddrive only and try and get windows to load, then continue with the other parts until it fails to post :)

could it not be power supply related?

If you have tried my other suggestions, the only other thing it be is a dead cpu,psu or mobo, you cant test the cpu without putting it in another board with the same socket and you cant test the board without trying a different cpu,you can test the psu with voltmeter or by exchanging it with yours as they are usually universal unless its a proprietry gateway psu

i dont think it would be the power supply.... i turn it on and all the fans turn on, the HD spinds, the cd drive opens and closes..... so ya.... ya i can't really test the MB or CPU, so if there any kind of way i can make sure its the MB thats fried?

makes no difference a single rail could have died or be unstable which is only detectable with a voltmeter, but the odds are its ok,there is no other way AFAIK to test the mobo without another cpu of the same socket, any beeps codes?you tried removing everyhting not needed?

The post is the monitor clicking on and the cpu, ram, video checks, harddrive detection ect,its universal to most pcs,a black screen with white writing :)
