    Hi
    I don't mind if you move this thread if it has a home of it's own already...not too sure if my problem is meant to start under someone else's post?

    I've done all the Read Me First stuff, and am attaching those 5 logs - this is message 1 - I had done Malwarebytes before and it removed a bunch of stuff, so I'm attaching that log too, in case it helps (makes 6 in total). The last one (MGtools) says I have MBR rootkit in C drive...is this what is making our computer freeze a lot and to duplicate the Help Assistant folders?

    Also, I had to open a lot of folders and things that were hidden during your Read Me First process; should I close these again now - the computer is feeling vulnerable - or wait until the problems are resolved??

    Please let me know what to do next - I'm not brilliant at computers, but I can follow instructions....

    The newfiles log within the MGLogs.zip is missing some information pertaining to the MBR infection. There should be a list of files in your temp folders.

    Particularly these types:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\$$$dq3e
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\$67we.$
    C:\Windows\Temp\XXXX ----> four letters. ( I am not recalling the exact four).

    These need to be removed. If you can copy what all is in that folder to notepad, save it and attach it to your next post we can proceed.

    Now, if you can manually remove them, then we can have you fix your MBR infection, but not until they are gone.

    This is the way to fix your MBR:
    You will need to boot to the Recovery Console that you may have installed (perhaps when you installed ComboFix) to remove this infection. If not, then you will need to boot to your XP CD and enter the Recovery Console.

    Now boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

    You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

    Then boot back into normal mode.

    Additionally, we need to stop BitTorrent from running at start up and you should also uninstall the ASK Toolbar. But we need to do the above first.

    If you can manually remove the temp files, and reboot then run CCleaner, then do the recovery console, when you are done, run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    If not, then attach the notepad list of files in the temp folder.

    Hi, thanks for answering.

    I have tried to remove $67we.$ and $$$dq3e but get an error message that reads:

    cannot delete $$$dq3e:It is being used by another person or program.
    Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

    I've attached the list of what's in my temp folder. Is the other one I should be deleting the one called: xsw2 ?

    Also, did you find my other post with the spare log files - it disappeared after I posted it - it was called MBR rootkit + Help Assistant folders Part 2.

    You need to keep all your replies in this thread. I don't know what happened to your missing thread.

    Did you do this??

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Now let's use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\$67we.$
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\$$$dq3e
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\dd_ATL90SP1_KB973924MSI6914.txt
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\dd_ATL90SP1_KB973924UI6914.txt
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\scs17.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\scs18.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\xsw2

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Hello Tim

    I have done the Recovery Console fixmbr (thank goodness it was installed by combofix, because we were unable to locate a xp cd).

    I ran Combofix again, with the drag/drop of the text file. Log is attached.

    The only remaining file in temp folder now is: Perflib_Perfdata_6e0.dat

    I ran the MGtools .bat file and the log is attached below.

    I have also attached the 2 logs from the orginal Malwarebytes as described on my first posting. I have also uninstalled the ASK programme, but have no idea how to stop BitTorrent from running at Startup.

    The HelpAssistant and HelpAssistant.PC1 folders are still in the Documents and Settings folder. Is there any way I can delete these without them mulitiplying again?

    Oh, and Happy New Year!

    Very good, the MBR Rootkit is gone. Now we can clean up.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant.PC1\WINDOWS
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant.PC1\UserData
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant.PC1
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant\Incomplete
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant\Contacts
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant\common
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant\Bluetooth Software
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant

    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "BitTorrent DNA"=-

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440}]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now go to the control panel / user accounts/ and you should be able to delete the HelpAssistant account.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now! We should be able to give you the final clean up from all this work. :)

    hello again

    Okay, I did everything you said, and I have attached the logs as requested.

    There was a small difference, as below:

    Because I am running XP Home Edition, the Help Assistant folder is not in the User Accounts folder.

    However, I found something called "PC1\Help Assistant" under:
    System --> Advanced --> User Profiles --> Settings

    I deleted this from here, and hope that was okay.

    Now there is not a Help Assistant.PC1 folder in C:\Documents and Settings
    There is still a Help Assistant folder with 149 MB. Should this still be here?

    The computer can now be left running, and doesn't freeze, and it also works much faster now than it used to.

    Just one other thing - the HP printer/scanner has a little pop-up every time the computer restarts, including during the ComboFix manouveres. This didn't use to happen. Is there any way to stop it?

    Many thanks for your help so far.

    I restarted the computer just to confirm: the pop-up box is requesting me to align a new print cartridge and check if I have enough ink - there is plenty, and I align it after every replacement.

    You may need to reinstall your printer or discuss this in the software forum.

    You are showing the HelpAssistant account:
    Code:
    Users on this computer:
    Is Admin? | Username
    ------------------
       Yes    | Administrator
              | ASPNET
              | Guest (Disabled)
       Yes    | HelpAssistant
       Yes    | home
              | SUPPORT_388945a0 (Disabled)

    The account needs to be disabled.

    You can use windows explorer to find these and remove them:
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant.PC1
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant
    C:\Program Files\Ask.com

    If you can't do it manually, then do the below:
    download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    If these items are removed, then you can do the following clean up instructions:
    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
