About a week ago was trying to clean up husbands computer, he was having trouble with the browser (IE) redirecting to other websites. I ran Malwarebytes, which found nothing, then I deleated and downloaded a new Spybot Search & Destroy and ran it. It showed an infection with Windows Protection Suite, 5 files and Virtumond, 1 file. Spybot cleaned Virtumond but said it could not clean Windows Protection Suite. I ran Spybot again and it did not show any infection. So in looking for an online scanner, I found the Windows Live online scanner and tried it. It found an infection and said it cleaned it but I could not find any logs so I don't really know what it was.

The computer had quit redirecting so hubby was happy but I wasn't satisfied that I had gotten everything and found your website while looking for answers. I went through the READ AND RUN and the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure and found more vermin. Hope I did all the steps correctly. The only problem I had while running the scans was Root Repeal gave me an error message "Could not read the boot sector. Try adjusting the Disk Access Level in the Options dialog" though it did give me a log upon finishing.

After running the scans the computer seems to run even better but I saw that Root Repeal reported a MBR Rootkit. And there were several other pieces of malware reported, a rogue, a trojan and an infected system file which was fixed, I believe.

    My logs are attached.

    Thank you

Your logs are clean, though there are a few leftover pieces of junk to remove:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ddc6c6c
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MSRUXEJS

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Had success with the cleanup with MGtools/analyse. Success with Regedit. As the computer was running better than it has in a long time, I went ahead with the cleanup process, getting rid of the files we used also the two that you told me to remove. Also, disabled and enabled the restore point.

Will work through the prevention steps tomorrow.

Thank you again. I really appreciate your time and effort and the fact that there is such a great place to come to get help. I could never have done this on my own.
