I am running Xp with Norton 2004 antivirus and want to download the McAfee AVERT stinger as you advise in your nice antiviral/spyware/Trojan page. Should I uninstall or disable the Norton first before downloading or should there not be any problem?

A second question: I have run the Trend Micro viral scan in regular user mode, and it says the system is clean, although my Norton claims I have TRojan horse and TrojanlowZone@reg on board.

I know I should run this program in safe mode with networking, but I don't seem to be able to first save the program in regular user mode and then run it later in safe mode. TRying it the otherway around, I can't get internet access in safe mode with networking to access the program to run it. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

    Thanks very much.

You can use Stinger with no problem. It is not an antivirus application. It is just a special scanning tool.

Some scanners find things that others do not. That is why we use several of them. If you cannot get network access in safe mode, it could be due to using a dial-up connection. Is that what you use?

Just work your way thru all steps of the READ ME FIRST. If you have any problems, write them down and tell us later, but continue with the steps.

Have you run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal
Make sure you run the online scanners even if you have to run them in normal boot mode.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).
