I have the latest McAfee software installed onto my PC. We bought the CD and installed it .. and with it came 2 30 day trials.

    1 being the Privacy Service.

The 30 day trial has just run out and I have no ideal what Privacy Service does .. and if I really need to shell out £20 now my freebie has run out.

Any help and advice would be great.

I'd be interested to hear from any one who hasn't got it and finds they don't need it .. I'm just so wary and and never know if it's worth buying or not.
I'm the only one who uses the pc so it's not like I have children to protect.

Privacy Service I think blocks Ads and filters inappropriate sites, but the help file should tell you.

It's up to you if you think it's worth buying.

If not, there are free alternatives available from the downloads section here, that are pretty good.

Privacy Service and what it does

as to needing it, well yes/no.... yes you need something to protect your privacy while on the internet but not necassarily McAfee Privacy Service as their are some free options available, some of the items that PS does as you say you dont need like the 3 types of content filtering.

Depending on Windows version you already if you use Internet Explorer (IE) and Service Pack 2 have Popup Blocking and can set Content Filtering via the Content Advisor tab ( tools > interent options > content ) but your an adult and dont need to have that option enabled.

you can also dump IE and go with a safer option in Firefox no doubt you have heard of this alternative browser on the news and press.

Clearing out your temporary files and folders, where info on surfing etc are stored can be achieved free with this software CCleaner if you were to need file shredding then this also free will do that Eraser

but one quick thing you can enable in Internet Explorer is to set it not to save encrypted pages to disk ( banking pages ) goto Tools > Interent Options > Advanced and tick "do not save encrypted pages to disk" > Apply

other options are to make sure you have Antivirus ( kept upto date ) a Firewall, Antispyware software these all help in keeping you as safe as possible on the net.

and last but not least have a read of our guides to safe surfing http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525

Thanks for all the input. It's really appreciated especially that part about not saving encrypted pages. wow, I never knew about that at all. Great tip.

I'll also try out that CC Cleaner. I'm always wary about trying out firefox .. I've heard of people having problems with it. I'm not *that* PC savvy so get very wary to try new things.

But I do have IE and I do run service pack 2, pop up blockers are on. McAfee constantly updates itself and the firewalls are all on.

    Thanks once again

You don't need to be wary of FireFox, it's really very simple and much safer than IE.

Also, you don't have to, and can't, uninstall Internet Explorer, and you can use as many browsers as you like.

I have IE, FireFox and Opera on mine. There is nothing stopping you from trying it if that's what you want.
