Sorry for posting this here but I'm really hoping someone can help. I've tried to find answers at McAfee's site and so far have not been able to fix my problem. My computer has been running extremely slow ever since last Thursday when McAfee updates were installed. I have gone through the Malware removal list here at Major Geek's thinking I may have been infected and really didn't find any major problems. My computer runs just fine in saftboot mode when McAfee is NOT up and running. I even uninstalled it last night and my computer ran fine. I reinstalled after that, and it took my computer aaaages to shut down. It took forever to boot up today...I'd guess 10 minutes before I could even open an IE page!!! Once the IE page is open, it will go to websites fairly quickly. Opening McAfee security center takes at least 60 seconds. Everything is just sooooooooo slow!! I use this computer to work from home and am getting extremely frustrated. I am actually downloading AVG right now and plan to run that until Mcafee gets their act together. I have a paid subscription until the middle of next year so I am extremely aggravated about this! Does anyone have a clue how to help??

I have Mcafee Security Center V 7 build 7.0.331, Virus Scan v11 Build 11.0.213, Personal Firewall V8 build 8.0.207, and site advisor v1.6 build 1.6.3540. I run windows xp sp2.

    Thanks!!!

I run macafee and have so for 3 yrs with no probs. Maybe its somthing else. Granted Mac doesnt protect from all but somthing is better than nothing. Post comp specs maybe its somthing there, or have you downloaded anything new or installed any new progs? There are plenty here who are more knowledgable than I but you at the right place.

Mcafee is known as a resource hog and really doesn't protect your computer as well as other free alternatives. I suggest uninstalling mcafee and going to a different antivirus such as AVG or avast!. I recoment AVG over avas but thats just my opinion.

    You can download AVG here

    or

    Avast! here

I agree with CWO - I've been using McAfee for a number of years without any real problems. But having said that on occasion their updates sometimes do cause problems. Download the latest superdat file and see if that helps - virus definition 4858 as I type.

Or, try downloading any updates, vice any superdat files, which only updated their virus definitions.

Or, if you feel that mcafee is slowing things down, try removing it Temporarily, by going to:

Click START, then RUN, then type in: msconfig (press enter).

Now click the startup tab, and uncheck anything to do with mcafee.
Also, click the services tab, and uncheck anything to do with mcafee.
Press ok, then, yes to reboot.

Upon reboot, a message will appear, stating that you have modified some items. Ignore this, and see if any slow downs appear. IF not, then, simply, go back into msconfig, and recheck the items you unchecked, and uncheck items on the startup tab.

Thanks all! I have been using McAfee for at least 6 years now with no major problems. It just seems that it really slowed my computer down after the update from last Thursday. I'll try your suggestion, theefool, and see if I can tell a difference. I feel like I will, as my computer runs fine in safeboot mode.

BTW, I have already downloaded AVG as a backup.

Ok..tried that... and really can't tell any difference. It is still taking 15 minutes for my computer to fully boot up!! I've already gone through the Read Me First posts on the malware removal board, and someone is helping me with that process. Hopefully, we'll figure out what the problem is. Thanks for your help, all.
