Mcfee or AVG?

Help! I have an older computer running XP with only 258MB Ram and using a slow DSL from ATT.

I was running AVG anti-virus, and Comodo firewall. My computer was slow, but managable. An ATT tech convinced me to try their free McAfee.

After I installed it and removed several spyware programs it is not compatible with: AdAware, Spybot S&D, and of course AVG and Comodo, I now find my computer crawling.....

It takes forever for pages to load, and McAfee scans do not seem to be finding any more malware than AVG did. It also pops up during searches and is generally driving me nuts.

Unless anyone has any suggestions on spiking my system---or perhaps can point out something I might be doing wrong, I feel I should remove McAfee and re-install my other programs.

How can I make sure I get ALL of McAfee off my computer? I know AVG left several files when I uninstalled, and I have a feeling McAfee will leave a lot more files lying around.

    Thanks, so much.

Using McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool:
    - Double click the MCPR.exe
    - A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically.
    - Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed. Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
    - After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
    - Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window: The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
    - Press Y on the keyboard.
    - Wait for the computer to restart.
    - All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.

I'd go back to your earlier security set up although without AAware and S&D.
    Down load AVG8.5 from

Custom install and uncheck Link Scanner and Tool Bar...

I prefer usingSuperAntiSpyware and MalwareByte over AdAware and S&D

Both are free and excellent scanners..

You do need more ram in the system...

    Cheers.....

I have a similar system as yours. It's over 6 yrs. old though I have upgraded some components. My system funs fast and clean with this setup:

I use Spyware Terminator with the Real-Time Shield enabled, SpyBot mainly for the immunization feature (It's great for your host file protection and can replace Spyware Blaster), MalwareBytes for weekly scanning, and I use Avast! for anti-virus needs. I also disable activeX in IE, install IE7Pro, and use mainly Firefox with AdBlock Plus and Download Statusbar (with it, I can easily have everything I download scanned by Avast!). And believe it or not, Windows Firewall is more than enough with a hardwire router between your computer and the modem.

    Hope that helps!

I suggest you follow above instructions and uninstall Mc... and get AVG free 8.5 . Then post your computer system specifics, brand, operating system, and type of internet service you have.
Slow could be from lots of issues.

Another first is I suggest you install malwarebytes antispyware free, run a scan..

Then let us know the above specifics.

Thanks everyone for your excellent advice and suggestions. I am so very grateful. This site is just amazing.

Should I do the Special Removal Procedures sticky thread too? Before or after I send McAfee to hog heaven?

You have saved my computer many times for several years now.
