7 year old ME 2 G computer, has firewire, concerned about losing info, someone suggested getting things transfered to external HD. Can't seem to find one that supports ME, any suggestions?

You guys are great! Have helped kept this ole nag going by defragging and ccleaner for a couple years! Still don't have the $$ for the new system I'd like! Continued to backup photos on CD's and thought the external HD would be the solution! If the computers dies when the external HD is plugged in is info. on it safe?

I too still have a 7yr old pc running ME (we are a rare breed LOL)

Just how much are you looking to back up?What I did before getting my new pc (which i couldn't afford myself but im an impulse buyer rolleyes:D) I got a 1GB usb flash drive to store the pictures and things I want to keep and eventually transfer to my new pc.

If you want to save your whole drive this option is probably not for you. However if its a few things considering you back up your pictures to cds then this might work for you. :)

Im sure someone wiser then me will advise you on the external HD as i have no clue about them lol

    Thanks dynamond.
Yours turned out to be the best advice! I'm not familiar with the device you mentioned (no ME issues?) did a brief search and there seems to be a range in price from $16 to $80 I think I have over 4 G's of pictures on this, most have been duplicated on CD's so 1GB may be enough for what has not been stored.....I know, I'm an image hog, artists are that way... photo references for paintaings and such. (I'd have to live well into the 100's to use them all)

Another problem has come up I have been using trend PCcillin for virus protection for 7 years and they no longer support Windows ME I googled and came up with a free one called "avast" But Trend had an add for ME on the same page so that one may not support ME either! What do you use?

I think it would be best to start a new thread.
    Thanks again for the response,

Thats the one I bought and it took some figuring out to make it work, but now it does! If you just use it as a drag and drop usb drive it works fine - on my pc it showed D:removable disk, E:launchpad - if you go into the removable disk part and drop what you want to copy in there, it will work. It is how ever not compatible with the U3 smart feature (Do not use the launchpad!!) and if you try to use it, it wont work and you will frustrate your self (i sure did! rolleyes). I almost thought I wouldnt work period until someone told me to just use the USB not the U3 smart feature

Thats what i use(d) for my ME computer as everything else made my computer freeze.

WinME supports external USB hard drives, and should support firewire as long as the ME drivers for the firewire are loaded correctly. Check your motherboard or PC maker's web site for drivers.... and possibly new chipset drivers also....
