Greetings Forum - and Malware Fighters!! :wave

Once again I turn to you experts for assistance. I am helping my friend, this time on her laptop. She does not know what she may have done to get this piece of malware. "System Tool"

When she called me & I started to see what I could do to help over the phone. All we could run was SAS - in safe mode. She was getting frustrated since the computer kept turning off & then some kind of scan automatically starting.

I then stopped by there and I could not do Anything! I could not download any anti-malware, anti-virus or anything like that. And I could not run what was already on the computer.

I found a piece of software online, that was supposed to help - "RKill" and I think it removed it?? And I was able to then download SAS, MBAB, & others.

I then began to fulfill the "Readme". Logs are attached.

    Thanks again.

PS - this was my first experience with Vista. All of my computers are running XP Pro. I hope I did everything right.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\programdata\oBiLoBg06304

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Please go to virustotal and upload the following files for analysis, and let me know the results.
    • C:\Users\Nadya\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\DownloadInfo.initmp

Could you please get this: DownloadInfo.initmp into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:

    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

What is your friend using for antivirus?

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

You must tell me how things are running at this point, please. :)

Good Morning Kestrel - Hope all is well with you & yours!

Thank you so much for such a quick reply :)

I forgot to mention that when I went to download both "ComboFix" & "RKill", a weird little multi color type of logo (similiar to a Windows type of logo & same colors?) was attached right on top of it! I don't know if this means anything with a possible tainted download, or not? Anyway, this will probably be corrected as we move forward. I did notice that when you had me do the drag and drop of cfscript, a new update was required & with a new version downloaded, the desktop icon no longer had that alien logo on top of it.

Anyway, things went smoothly, I hope. I will attach all per your suggestions. And as far as "How are things working now" Well, it truly appears to be night & day difference. I can get online & go to the places per you suggestions with no problems. I was able to download items with no problems and that scary looking with the great big red warning, desktop hijacking scanner piece of *#@p, is no longer present. I hope this is all a positive, ;)

Per your question, I don't think my friend was using any anti-virus. I think I will download "Avast"? or should I possibly use Anti-Vir or AVG. Thoughts? (I have her laptop right now, I will return it once it is "Cleaned" & it has the green light, from you)

There are things/programs, I don't think she needs, it was a shared computer with her kids, but now they have their own laptops, so I guess I will just have to ask what she uses & doesn't. Are there things that are obviously visible to you that can go? Any suggestions?

And the items that load at startup --- Sheeeeesh! :cry -- that's what it will do to me if this was mine, golly. I will work on that too.

    Kestrel, Thanx!!!

    When I uploaded to virustotal:

This was followed by two (2) buttons: Reanalyse & View Last Report

    When pressed "View Last Report":

Then there was a list of many programs? Did you want this list as well? It was populated with programs like bitdefender; avast; avg; kaspersky; microsoft; panda; just to name a few.

At the bottom was additional information:

    Have a pleasant day! :)

I don't mean this to be a "Bump".

As I was going thru the computer, just checking things out, I came across the fact the "c:\Documents & Settings" was not accessible??? It says access denied. Then when I just went to "Documents" to try & open any of the media files: pics, videos, music, etc; No access is provided.

Is this part of the virus or malware that is preventing access?

    No, it's a Vista/Windows 7 thing. :)
    I would go with avast!

    c:\programdata\oBiLoBg06304 <--- Delete this folder.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Good Morning,

I appreciate the help & it appears that all is well again!

Your assistance apparently repaired this problematic/infected laptop, Thanx :)

And my friend is appreciative as well ;)

I have completed the final cleaning & protection steps of the Readme.

But I have a question of curiosity, it appears that utilities that are designed to scan for virus & malware, etc, which I have downloaded, have a "Logo - Shield" looking thing with Windows colors, on top of the desktop icon? Is this indicitave of a tainted download or a malware thing? Or is it - as mentioned earlier... just a Vista/Win 7 thing?

I have deleted the file you suggested & I did install "Avast". Thanks for that opinion.

    Have a great day!

Yes it's the way some icons are displayed in Vista, nothing to worry about. :)

    Hello

    Great! That is a relief.

As mentioned at beginning of thread, I am new to Vista or Win7, as my machines all (but one, just built a HTPC) have had XP Pro.

Anyway, I am glad to report to my friend - all is clear, green light!

Thanks so much, machine is running great, and is back in her hands.

    :wave bye.

You :major 's - are awesome!
