    I have been informed by campus network security that my laptop is infected with Mebroot/Torpig which was detected by network connections my computer made. After thinking I had cleared any problems I reconnected the machine in the network brielfy to transfer data and was informed again that I was infected. I have run the full sequence of requested scans and would appreciate some expert help to clean and repair my system. I have attached the first 4 logs and the final will follow in the next post.

    Additional information:
    1. I am running the latest version of Windows XP Professional with all updates and service patches on a Sony Vaio. My primary AntiVirus package is Sophos with automatic updates.
    2. Scans with a slew of antivirus applications and online scans found and removed malware, none of which was labeled Mebroot/Torpig or Sinowal.
    3. I have been having rootkit detections by Prevx ($mbr.0 in c:\) when the machine is connected to the internet with IE8 running, but I have since shut it down after reading that it can cause false positives.
    4. I had a boot problem yesterday that the machine's registry was corrupt and that windows could not boot: STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\config\SYSTEM or it's log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writeable. However, booting the Recovery console and running chkdsk solved the problem. The problem has not reoccured and may have been caused by conflicting AV applications.
    5. I attempted to run fixmbr from the recovery console, but got a warning that I had a non-standard MBR and that I might damage my partitions so I stopped.

    You are showing an MBR infections.

    You have multiple Anti-virus software installed. Choose one and uninstall the others!!

    AV: Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {D3C23B96-C9DC-477F-8EF1-69AF17A6EFF6}

    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Run the below tool from Prevx

    After running the Prevx scan. Reboot and then continue with the below.

    Now run Ccleaner!

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Thank you, Tim

    I followed all the instructions. Here are the logs. The Prevx scan was clean.

    Are there logs of the ip addresses my computer connects to? I would like some way to ensure that I have cleaned the infection given that it transmits personal data. FYI to everyone out there - There were fraudulent charges to my credit card yesterday and I had to close the account. Be wary.

    The files are still there. Let's try doing this:

    GMER's MBR.exe

    • Double click on the MBR.exe file to run it.
    • A log will be produced & saved to the desktop, called MBR.log.
    • Rename this log. Attach this log to your next message.

    Then run the below instructions.
    Click Start > Run and copy & paste the following text in the code box into the Run box and then click OK. You must copy and paste or type in this exactly. The quotes must be exactly as shown and there is a space before the -f
    Code:

         "%userprofile%\desktop\mbr.exe" -f

    Now double click on the mbr.exe file and attach the new mbr.log

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now re-run ComboFix.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Tim,

    I followed the instructions, but I am not sure that I saved the Avenger log (ie this may be the result of the first run). I re-ran Avenger to check that the files were deleted and it returned that the objects were not found.

    Thank you for your help.

    Looks good!! :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to tahe cleaning procedures ian step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
