    Hi,

I ran into a ton of problems 4 days ago (but expect the infection was 6 days ago). I've done a lot of research (here and elsewhere) and done a ton of scans with various products. I believe the trojan is: Win32/Mebroot.CZ (as identified by ESET online scanner). I'll give you the symptoms, then tell you what I've done so far. I'm hoping that you'll be able to tell me if I was successful in removing Mebroot or not. But, I expect there's still some lingering effects (MGTools found some things.)

So, you're help would be greatly appreciated! Do I still have it? Are there things I missed in cleaning it?

    Symptoms:

The very first sign I got, not sure if related, was a McAfee "Potentially Unwanted Program Detected" error: Name: Generic PUP.z!n. Location: c:\documents and settings\Downloaded Program Updates\MozillaCacheView.exe.

    Then, later:

    1. System hangs permanently when trying to go to Standby - saying "Preparing to Standby" until I do hard reboot.

    2. System would take forever to boot up and then the drive was constantly churning away doing something else for 15 minutes.

    3. Noticed "HelpAssistant" account with HelpAssistant folder under "Document & Settings". This folder contains a copy of other user's files, plus other things. Note: I couldn't find the "HelpAssistant" user under the normal "Users" feature in control panel, but I did find it using "net user" command line request.

    4. Google started delaying doing searches. It didn't matter what I searched for in Google, it would ALWAYS say "Waiting for rev-advert.com..." on the Firefox status bar. This would occur for 5-8 seconds before finally displaying the search results.

    5. Later got McAfee "Potentially Unwanted Program Detected" error: Name: Generic PUP.z. Location: c:\i386\GTDownDE_87.ocx.

    WHAT I'VE DONE ALREADY:

    1. Ran ESET Online Scanner which found 3 files as variants of "Win32/Mebroot.CZ" (I can send that logfile). Files were 499.tmp, 49A.tmp, 49D.tmp. It cleaned by deleting - quarantine.
    2. Ran ESET's EMebRemover.exe which found nothing. Said: "MBR Rootkit (Win32/Mebroot) was not found on your system."
    3. Ran Symantec's FixMebRoot.exe which found nothing. Said: "Trojan.Mebroot has not been found active on your computer."
    4. Ran F-Secures "Blacklight" program which found nothing.
    5. Ran McAfee's Rootkit Detective which found nothing.
    6. Ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which found 19 infected objects. One was the Trojan.Dropper. (I can send that logfile. Infected: vuxdfe.dll. All objects quarantined and deleted.
    7. Downloaded XP Windows Recovery Console (my Dell disk wouldn't work) as an ISO image. Successfully ran "fixmbr".
    8. Turned off "Remote Assistance". My Computer --> Properties --> Remote --> uncheck.
    9. RAN "net user HelpAssistent /delete" to get rid of HelpAssistant user. Also, deleted unknown user "SUPPORT_388945a0". Ran systemscan.exe to check users.

Checking my root member, throughout this process I ran "mbr.exe" looking to see if it was fixed correctly but I'm still seeing something suspicious. Is this "malicious code" O.K.?

PE file found in sector at 0x06FC3DD8 !

    =========================
So, I've run all the cleanup and scanning programs. The files are attached.

I did have problems with these steps:

    1. Downloading ComboFix.exe error: When I try to download ComboFix.exe to my desktop I get error "C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Desktop\ComboFix.exe could not be saved because you cannot change the contents of that folder." Simultaneously received McAfee Trojan Removed notice: "McAfee has automatically blocked and removed a Trojan.

    Location: C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\a68y42cd.default\Cache\1EF26877d01"

    2. When trying to change MSconfig for Normal Startup mode. I got error: "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes." But, I am the administrator account on this machine. After I reboot, however, it looks like MSconfig is in normal mode.

    ======================

Sorry to be so long-winded. But, I wanted to give you all the details. Does it look like memboot is still around? I did see MGTools found "HelpAssistant" user in the registry (UserInfo.txt). Am I missing something by not being able to run ComboFix.exe?

Thank you SO much for your help.

You have a MBR infection. ( You also need to, at least, double your RAM)!!

download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

Run the below tool from Prevx

Prevx 3.0 use the button that says Download Prevx 3.0

After running the Prevx scan. Reboot and then continue with the below.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run Ccleaner and then make sure this folder is emptied:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Local Settings\Temp\

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for the help! I ran the programs, but hit a few snags.

    1. After I ran Avenger and rebooted, I got the error "Windows cannot find 'c:\cleanup.exe'." I just clicked "OK" and moved on. Is that O.K.? Where was I supposed to get cleanup.exe from? It does appear to have deleted the Temp folder files $$$dq3e, $67we.$, xsw2.

    2. I ran CCleaner and it cleaned up some things in: C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Local Settings\Temp\, but it was not entirely emptied. So I manually deleted the remaining items.

I'm curious what you think about the MBR.exe output from my original post. Does the "malicious code @ sector 0x06FC3DC2 !" line mean I'm still infected? It's still showing up.

I expect there's a bunch of cleanup to do now?

Thanks a bunch for all of your help! This thing's been killing me.

Let's just verify that your MBR infection is gone. Those three files are a dead giveaway to that infection.

Previx has failed lately with some of these infections, so please re-run ComboFIx and attach the new log.

I'm still not able to download ComboFix. I get the same error as I mentioned in my first post. When I click to download ComboFix.exe to my desktop I get error "C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Desktop\ComboFix.exe could not be saved because you cannot change the contents of that folder." And, simultaneously I get McAfee Trojan Removed notice:

"McAfee has automatically blocked and removed a Trojan.
    About this Trojan
    Detected: Artemis!1EF40581675C (Trojan), Artemis!1EF40581675C (Trojan)
    Location: C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\a68y42cd.default\Cache\1EF26877d01"

When I click download again, I get:
File not found: Firefox can't find the file at http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe.

Is there some trick to downloading ComboFix?

    Thanks, Steve

You need to disable McAfee when you try to download and install ComboFix. See if that works.

O.K. - Turning off McAfee worked and I downloaded and ran ComboFix. My log is attached. I look forward to your reply. I really need to make sure this machine is clean and appreciate all your help.

And, I'll happily rerun any of the other scans to make sure this thing is gone (SAS, Malware, Root Repeal, MG, Avenger, Prevx, etc.).

    Thank you, Steve

    Looks good.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to tahe cleaning procedures ian step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

O.K. I did all the cleanup steps. I hope it's gone. I have a couple questions:

    1. I'm curious what you think about the MBR.exe output from my original post. Does the "malicious code @ sector 0x06FC3DC2 !" line mean I'm still infected?

    2. Is there any indication (logs, etc) where I got this mebroot trojan? What site?

Thanks a ton for all your help!

You were infected with a MBR infection, which we cleaned out. As to how you got infected, here is our canned speil:

There are many vehicles by which people get infected. Downloading and clicking on adverstisments are only two possible ways. Others include but are not limited to

    * NOT KEEPING ALL SOFTWARE UPDATED!!!
    * surfing - usually certain websites are the main problem
    * click links to view pictures or videos, or listen to music....etc
    * not reading what you are clicking on and even if you do it may be worded in a form to trick you into clicking the wrong answer. Sometimes the answer is the opposite of what you think. And sometimes there is no correct answer because it is already too late one the popup has appeared..
    * installing codecs to view videos or sound
    * installing cracks and or illegal software
    * downloading via P2P or Torrent programs
    * downloading from websites that do no check their downloads to see if they are safe and very few actually do this even though they say they do. (We do at Major Geeks!)
    * reading emails from unknown senders especially if you have html enabled and also especially if clicking on any attachments
    * reading emails from friends who don't know they are infected and may not even know they are sending you emails.

I know that many people like to say that they don't understand how they are getting infected, but the fact remains that in most cases it is by their own doing. I surf more than most people and access all kinds of websites while trying to test various malware. I have to eliminate all of my protection (even my router which has a hardware firewall) and I still have a hard time getting infected and I have to knowingly agree to install things to get infected.

General Tips for everyone (not just you )

    * If you do not have a router or do not have a router with a hardware firewall, then get one.
    * If you are not using a real bidirectional firewall then install one and only one. The Windows (any version) firewall is not adequate.
    * Install one and only one antivirus program.
    * Install one and only one realtime antispyware protection program
    * Install the below for background protection
    o SpywareBlaster
o Spybot with SDHelper and use the Immunization feature
    * Do period scans with you AV and AS programs?
    * Use additional scan only programs like SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes.

    TimW,

Thanks for all your help with this. Before I start using this computer again for sensitive stuff, I still have one nagging question. I'm curious about the MBR.exe output that says "malicious code @ sector 0x06FC3DC2 !" I hate to keep bringing this specific question up - looking back I've asked about it several times. But, it still concerns me. I just ran it again and got the output below. Does this mean I'm still infected? Or, is it O.K.?

    This is the important line:
    user & kernel MBR OK

For your peace of mind, do this:
    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    MBR::

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Your question of that suspicious line is legit, it's just that the scan will give false positives that are mostly related to the manufacturer of the machine. Dell, for example, has a non-standard MBR.

    Attach the new Combo log.
