Media Player Classic + HC

Hi Geeks, running windows XP Home SP3, system is running very well. Installed 1.7.2 of Media Player Classic so that I can sync subtitles, but all subtitle functions are grayed out, for both .srt and .smi files, incl;using the File?Load function. Files are not read only or otherwise protected. The subtitle files play fine when opened with the video but need to be synced. How can I activate the grayed out functions. This is freeware so there is no upgrade issue.
