Been plagued by my media player not being able to play movies without from time to time making small halts. Especially when rendering pictures with large sceneries.
Tried to reinstall DivX and Xvid codecs, but that didn't help, and finally I got annoyed enough to launch Regmon and Filemon and they showed me that Media Player was constantly access this registry key:
The media player was accessing the registry several times a second, and since the access is synchronous (blocking). Then it caused the stuttering feeling.

I looked at the properties for the running media player and the only codecs listed was:
The only codec which wasn't natively microsoft was the DivX Decoder, so I uninstalled the codec (So now Xvid became the one to handle all types of AVI files), and ta-da the registry access disappeared and the media player behaved nicely again.

Have no idea why the DivX Codec 5.2 was behaving like, but it is nice to know there was a somewhat logical reason. Eventhough it wasn't visible at first glance.

    Nice catch.

I never even considered using regmon and filemon for that kind of thing.
