    Asus motherboard A8NVM socket 939 A64 3200+, XP Pro SP2
OK- the problem is with an internal media reader; it fits in one of the floppy bays and connects to the motherboard thru a USB header. When it's connected, it gets a yellow "!" in the device manager with the name "Genesys USB Mass Storage Controller" (the last word might be 'Device' I don't remember exactly). So I removed it, hooked it up to another PC, and it works fine, but it comes up in the device manager as "USB Mass Storage Device" without the 'Genesys'. I tried updating the Asus chipset software (it's a NVidia chipset) and that didn't work. I uninstalled the media reader, rebooted, and let Windows re-install it and that didn't work. So, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I pretty much figured it was a bad device when I hooked up an external one and it worked perfect; then I hooked the internal to a 2nd PC and it worked perfect.... :confused

A a yellow "!" in the device manager often indicates a device driver needs to be installed. Did the device come with a CD with software/driver on it? If not, have you visited the manufacturer's website to look for a downloadable driver?

Yeah, I'm real familiar with yellow exclamation points ;) It's not my device so I don't know if there's a driver CD. The device is branded "Media-To-Go" but apparently their web site is gone, and Genesys (they made the chipset in the reader) doesn't have drivers at their web site. It plugs-n-plays on WinXP and that's why I don't get that it works fine on one PC and not on the other. The driver doesn't show up in Add/Remove Programs and uninstalling thru the device manager doesn't actually remove the drivers. I think the XP built-in drivers are corrupt and that's where the problem is; and there's no way to remove it completely. I've tried driver roll-back; no dice.... I think I'll just give the guy the external reader in place of the internal.... unless someone has fix for this freekin' thing....

Query bent pin / hardware problem with the socket?

Is the socket enabled in BIOS?

Does the socket usb hub show working in device manager?

Nope. I moved the front panel USB port connector to the header in question and both front ports worked perfect. I also tried the external reader on the other header (the one the front USB was hooked to originally) and it still doesn't work. I guess this also answers your other 2 questions.... thanx anyway tho' ;)

Hey, thanx for the link... the driver available there is called "fixustor" which I'm assuming is short for 'fix USB storage'... anyway, I tried it last nite (from a different source/site) and it didn't work :( Thanx tho'. It's really not a big deal to go with the external reader and the guy would be able to use it on his other tower and his laptop too, so it might actually be better for him. I just hate admitting defeat (I think we all do ;) ) especially over something minor, like a freekin' driver of all things :banghead Thanx for your persistance.
