"The FBI's indictment named Kim Dotcom, 37 years old, as the founder and until last year chief executive of Megaupload."

Seriously. Did the guy legally change his name to this or is the FBI now accepting fake IDs from perps? :-D

    Thanks for the news, tgell.

I'm not that concerned about Megaupload, although it was great to find a single large download available on their site for free.

I hate that the whole idea of the internet and new ideas is being taken over by the big guys and "someone" decides what is available. Once Google started censoring their results instead of just spitting out the available data, we should have known it was over. Google was big enough to fight back and they didn't.

    Sad.

Given the way Megaupload worked, we really should have seen this coming. That does not make it suck any less though.

    . . . and thus it begins . . .

I started a thread a while back expressing dismay at the growing inclination of the powers that be to stick their bureaucratic noses into the internet. Expect overall costs for internet service to go up and the quality of service to go down, even though this is ostensibly an anti-piracy bill. Because once the government gets involved in something, it doesn't ever stop being involved in ever widening steps - and we will no doubt have to pay for their good but misguided intentions . . . and regulations, and oversight, and codes, and etc. etc. etc.

I agree, Mimsy - not constructive at all.

Yes, from what I have read that is exactly what he did . . . :-D

The government should butt out the internet is free for all to use it should not be controlled by a bunch of money grubbing turds who cheated and lied to get to where they are if they are so concerned about piracy make it not so needed, lower the cost of text books, music, movies, and video games they are the main pirated content they are upset about but when a text book can cost around $160, and the movies cost crap loads of money to watch(in theaters) or buy, music is a bit expensive as well depending on where you get it from, and video games cost like $30+ not to mention the cost of the system, and the fact that many games are on disposable media(cd's and such that get easily damged) and are being lost as time goes on

these are the reasons for the piracy if we can fix these problems there will be far less reason for the piracy

so to uncle sam I say screw off stop taking money from the corps to persue this and do you jobs fixing our dying economy and the other problems we elected your fat money grubbing butts to do

This will be an interesting court case for a few reasons and none more so that if they are found guilty of spreading and hosting warez and copyrighted media they the search engines and none more so that google will be in the firing line.

Its way way too hard to weed out bad links when you automatically spider urls.

Watching this story like a hawk! as it will change the face of the internet.
