I believe the culprit was windows indexer. Turned it off and things have been running much better. Also noticed hp printer software using more resources than necessary so I deleted all but the drivers needed to print. Now its just a monitoring thing. Making sure my system doesnt have the lag it did.

That's a good summation, unless something untoward happens, I suspect the culprits have been identified and 'fixed'.

Now just relax and use the PC ;)

If I was running W7, I would get rid of Norton and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials. But that's just my opinion!!;);)

Really?!? I am a firm believer in getting what you pay for. I know that since taking care of indexing and deleting the bloatware that HP sent out with their cd for my printer I am running less than 20k handles. Norton is not the resource hog that ppl would have you believe. At least not anymore. You take your freeware security. Ill keep my premium security and well both be happy!;) Kinda like comparing obama care vs. Private insurance. Sure they both work but which one would you really want?

Thanks everyone for all the help!

Hey, is Norton that much better than Free Comodo? I used to be a Norton fan,but the lag (on xp) was killing me. And I would get 'last years edition' on ebay, for like $15.00

I could not control the D/L ing of security updates, it would do it whenever it wanted. I have cable, but it still clogged it up...

Couldnt tell you, never tried comodo. But I dont plan on changing anytime soon. Norton 360 is very good, doesnt hog all the resources and catches everything. Yes it still updates every few minutes but it is minor updates. Unless your running a p3 you shouldnt have a problem. I got a 3 pack for like 45$ or something like that. May Have been a little more. Not sure.

Norton is ridiculous. Anyone that likes Norton has never fully committed to trying a (good) alternative.

I've used Norton, McAfee, NOD32, Kaspersky, Avast, etc. None compare in any way to Comodo Internet Security, which I've been using exclusively for the last probably 5 years (I still try other AV/firewall programs occasionally on test virtual machines, etc.). It's configuration flexibility, lightness on system resources, and protection are superb and superior, IMO.

Not turning this thread into a debate about a/v comparison. Start a new thread if that's what you want to do.

    This thread can be closed.......

I wasn't debating; I was merely posting my opinion, which was clearly implied. If you want to use Norton, then I hope you have a great unhampered malware-free computer experience with it. I'm not sure why someone that would choose a screenname such as yours would get so easily offended by an internet opinion. If I offended you, I'm sorry, but threads don't normally get force-closed unless there's an irresolvable conflict...

Just on aside, I'll post my info. I'm a bit over the top on ram, but, when I need to bring up memory hungry apps, I can go near capacity. Would like to know if the total lag is gone. I can see if slower CPUs could cause the lag. We use to have windows search installed at our work. At 1st it was great, but it eventually, dragged these computers down. So, yeah, killing it for an older computer is beneficial.

Oh, I'd go 24 Gig of ram, but, I'm waiting on the new x79 chipset coming soon.

@ Thefool: Yes it seems all lag is gone since stopping the indexer and search feature. I also dumped some of my printer software that wasn't really needed. I am getting normal speeds out of my memory (1.2- 1.3GB) pc seems to be running smooth.

Now I can get back to OC'ing my system...Or at least try! :confused

@mcmsc: No you didnt offend me. Like you, I have used many different a/v programs BUT, this thread was created because of memory issues. My a/v was mentioned as a possible source of conflict. That is why I said what I did about creating a thread for a debate. I made note to close this thread because my issue has been resolved.

True that my post didn't directly follow the intent of the thread, and I'm glad your memory issues have been resolved. I honestly have never seen WSI use RAM like that before. Hopefully they'll fix things like this with W8.
