Hello all. I'm new to the forum and have a problem I just can't figure out.

Frustration is on the rise. :confused

I built my rig about six months ago running xp pro. It had served me well. After moving my computer from living room to the office, reconnecting everything and hooking up my new 24" Acer P244w monitor she would not boot. I get one longer beep and two short beeps. I've looked over the internets and that beep code means memory or video card error. I reseated everything, making sure to rid myself of static only to get the same beeps. I tried only using one memory module. Same result. I don't have another gpu or other memory to swap. (No computer savvy friends) I don't want to purchase any additional hardware if at all possible. If anyone has any troubleshooting tips or tricks to share they would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you need any more info.

What is the motherboard model or computer model and brand.

    According to the manual

1 long, 2 shot: Monitor or graphics card error

I would try a different monitor and see if it helps.

I tried the monitor I used to have hooked up to it when it was working great. Mag CRT with a RGB to DVI converter. No luck.

I think it's likely the video card then

Do you have another video card to try? Maybe snag one out of another computer?

Try removing all unessecary hardware, like the GPU, any extra HDD's without the OS, sounds cards, etc.

Then try and boot using onboard video, then if it works, put the bits back in one by one, seeing which causes the problem.

Motherboard has no onboard video but the other stuff is worth a shot.

Since you just moved the pc make sure you didn't knock loose the power cable to your video card.

Like pclover said there is no onboard video. I only have 1 HDD, CPU, GPU and 1 stick of memory in. Do you mean the 6pin power cord for the gpu? That is connected. The GPU fan spins and still no luck. I can try purchasing one, but would rather not. I don't have access to a spare PCIx16 card.

Well guys, thanks for the help, I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and go for a new gpu. Any suggestions?

There are a lot out there at the $120 price point. But would like to keep it under $100, but if that extra 20 is worth it....

I would stretch that bit extra and get a 5770, which is around £120 which will be close to $120.

Or if you are happy with a smaller upgrade, then get a GTS 250 for around $100.

Any brands you like or are they all about even?

All very similar, just get one with the longest warranty.

EVGA is usually the best, but i think they only do Nvidia.

Just to let you know, if you turn on a PC with the GPU power connector removed, most cards will emit a continuous beep from their own speakers.

@laserline23: I would recommend an nVidia over an ATI as in my opinion they have a better price/performance ratio.

    Debatable.

I used to prefer NV, but ATI are miles ahead now, especially with the 5800 series, what is there to match that from NV?

Also, ATI have around 2x as many cards as NV which means there is a greater range of selection.

Video cards have speakers on them? I didn't know that

Lets not turn this into a ATI vs Nvidia fanboy thread lol

I purchased a new card from newegg.
    SAPPHIRE 100296HDMI Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready
It is better than what I had and for $70 ($60 after mir) and free shipping. I'm not trying to play Crysis on high, so hopefully it will work out and solve my problem.

I'll let you guys know how it goes once I get it.

    PS fanboys make me lol

I am not sure if they send a signal to the onboard buzzer, or if they have their own, but this does happen. I have forgotten to plug the power back in on many occasions.

@burrell: I did say in my opinion;)
