I have a computer that the specs says uses DDR3-1333/PC3-10600. I also have some new DDR3-1333 PC3-10666 ram that I bought for another machine project that went sour. Can I use the 10666 in the computer that uses 10600?

Thanks for reading and responding to the newb question.

What is the make and model of your motherboard?

Can't say for sure unless we can identify the mobo/chipset...

You might be able to install the PC3-10666 RAM but it will be throttled to 10600 speed. I've got a considerably older machine that I installed PC-2 6400s RAM (800MHz) modules in but they only run at PC-2 5300 (667MHz) speed on my machine.

If you go out to Crucial and run their memory wizard, it will show the specs of supported RAM.

Alternatively, if a custom built computer, you can visit the motherboard's webpage and there should be a QVL - qualified vendors list of supported RAM types.

Bottom line - as the mechanic said, we need to know the motherboard brand and model number.

Memory is backwards compatible, so you should be able to. Then again, if computers always did what they should be doing, there'd be no tech support jobs in this world.

This post by MA has a link to Belarc, a program that can tell you what's in your computer if you don't know. Or you can run the memory wizard Digerati linked to, it should also be able to tell you what model computer/motherboard you have.
