I have an Hp pavilion 6653 with a 533mhz processor. It currently only has 128MB of PC100 and I wanted to up grade it to 512MB of PC133 and it didn't work. The screen would just hang at the startup. Does anyone have any idea's. I was told that you can interchange pc100 and pc133, but you can't put pc100 in a pc133 dim slot.

Just did a quick search on your computer, and it has a limit on memory of 256 megs. Specs show it has only two memory slots and is limited to 128 meg chips in each slot. Hope this helps! :)

P.S. Judging by your 533Mhz processor, your memory is probably NOT running at 100Mhz. It is running at either 66Mhz or 133Mhz.

Almost certainly 66MHz. A search for memory for the Pavilion 6653 provides many references to PC100 memory, and none to PC133. If the Pavilion were running the memory bus at 133MHz, PC133 memory would be a requirement, not an option.

You may also need to distinguish between single- and double-density DIMMs. Some older machines using PC100 memory cannot accept double-density (single-sided) DIMMs.
