Just a quick question, not an emergency thank god.

I cleaned out my self built pc and my son was building his mom a pc. We figured out that we had bought more mem sticks than we needed for her pc, so we figured we would just throw the other 2 sticks into the paired slots on my pc while i had it apart(plus we tried putting in a new chip, flashed the bios, went horribly wrong and so went back to the original chip and reflashed, lol).

well, for some reason im still only recognizing the first 2 mem sticks. (8gb total, hoping to go for 16)

    win7 ultimate
    ASUS formula IV mobo
    2 1 tb samsung 7500rpm hdd, 1 raptor 10k rpm

So just wondering before i rip the pc apart again if there may have been something i just missed.

(rechecked all the simple things, twice, before the son had to get home cause it was getting late)

Just as some backround, i can build my own pc, but the son does all the software stuff, ive been around a while(as alot of you already know)and the son works for AMD in the IT dept, so im pretty sure its either something simple, a clash of memory, or maybe just dead memory?

    thanks yall~!

I've heard of this problem before. I think the only thing to do is a systematic check to find out what is wrong.

Are you sure the 'new' memory is compatible with your PC ? Just because it is the correct speed, number of pins, right voltage etc. doesn't necessarily mean it will work in your computer. Are the operating voltages of the two memories the same ? If they are different this might give you a problem. It might just be one manufacturer's memory doesn't like the other's !

What program are using to establish that the memory isn't being recognised ? You might try an alternative just to see that sees anything at all.

Try the computer with just the original memory in it. Does it work ? (From what you have written, it would).

Remove all the memory and try just one of the new DIMMs. Does it see that ?
Use one stick of your 'old' memory in the slot where you put the 'new' memory. Does it recognise that ?

    And so on.

Food for thought for sure. Ill have to do those things sometime.

I just checked windows to see how much it was recognizing really. Its not of huge import, as i dont believe that im going to benefit much from the extra memory. (although, who knows with games). It more comes down to the why than actually "needing" the xtra LOL

Thanks for the suggestions for sure!!!

I know what you really wanted was "Do this simple thing, and it will be fixed". Maybe someone with more expertise could suggest something but that's my best anser, mostly compiled through second-hand knowledge.
