    Hello again friends!!!

    STARTUP ISSUES
Two annoying and I hope simple issues. When I start up I get two notices that look like they are popping up from my SYSTRAY. One is DRIVERS OR APPLICATIONS DISABLED. When I click for more details it is telling me that CD RECORDING SOFTWARE WILL CAUSE WINDOWS TO BECOME UNSTABLE. When I click for more details the help and support center comes up and tells me to go to the Microsft site to download the CD recording drivers for Windows Media player which I use. But I typed in CD Recording Drivers in the search box and nothing came up! UGH

I also get UPDATES AVAILABLE message (for Windows XP) popping up and when I click for more details it tells me that I should upgrade to SP3. It looks like the Check For Updates feature is in my startup is that true? I want to disable that and check for updates myself or like I had it B4 check when I close down. I am also leery of loading SP3. Should I upgrade to SP3?

    SHUTDOWN ISSUES:
Just about everytime I shut down I get a couple windows popups that tell me some APP is still running and the PC is shutting these apps down or I could end them manually if I want. The two that happen most often are: SHELLCONHIDDENWINDOW and CCSVCHST. They do not stay up that long so I am hoping I wrote them down correctly.

Thanks in advance for your help. And I am sure you will help me like you have the past two times I have dropped by.

    :confused

I currently have three Dimension 2400 models in the house, all running SP3. Just install SP3. MS stopped support for XP SP2 so your computer is unpatched - not a good thing when you are hanging out on the web.

    thanks plodr!

Do you think that not having SP3 installed could be causing the issues that I raised here?

I honestly don't know but updating is the thing to do. If after updating, you still have problems, post what is happening.

Two of the Dimensions, I just updated in November and December 2010 to SP3 so I know it works.

    OK

I installed SP3 today without any problems except it was very slow.
BUT I am still having these issues:

Forget the popups from the tray. We need to know what is running.
Do you have CCleaner installed? If so, click on Tools then Startup. At the bottom right you will see a button to save a txt file. Save that and attach it to your nest post.

I'll have a look at this much later today. I have occupational therapy in an hour (hand problems - no I don't have carpal tunnel even though I spend hours on the computer!).

    1st item: HKCU:Run updateMgr "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe" AcRdB7_0_9 -reboot 1
can be disabled. You do not need Acrobat checking for updates.
If this is not the professional version, then this should be uninstalled and Adobe Reader X installed.

8th item: mimboot is related to MusicMatch jukebox and does not need to be running at startup
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/mimboot.exe-3157.html

9th item: Groove monitor, disable it
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/GrooveMonitor.exe-18228.html

10th item: Remote Control, unless your DVD drive came with a remote control and you use it, disable this
    http://www.pcpitstop.com/libraries/process/i/PDVDServ.exe.html

    11th item: Language.exe
I'd disable this, it is part of Cyberlink DVD. It probably has to do with subtitles.
If you notice a problem with playing a DVD then enable it.

    12th item: Symantec PIF alert
from reading about this, disabling this might stop some of the popups from the tray!

13th item, disable Real from checking for updates. I routinely do this on all computers.

14th Quicktime, disable. It doesn't need to load at startup. It will still work when you need anything that requires QT. I routinely also disable this on computers.

Last item: Norton GoBack Do you use this?
    It is pretty old.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoBack

It might be to your benefit to grab something newer.

I cleaned up all the startup items you suggested. It now runs faster.

I still need help here. Any suggestions:

When I start up I get this notice that look like it is popping up as a bubble from my SYSTRAY. It is DRIVERS OR APPLICATIONS DISABLED. When I click for more details it is telling me that CD RECORDING SOFTWARE WILL CAUSE WINDOWS TO BECOME UNSTABLE. When I click for more details the help and support center comes up and tells me to go to the Microsft web site to download the CD recording drivers for the media player I use which is Windows Media player. However I typed in CD Recording Drivers in the search box at the Windows Media Player site at Microsoft.com nothing came up! UGH

I don't use Windows Media Player so I can't help you with that.

Open Explorer (Windows, not Internet) and look over the listing in Program Files. The path is C:\Program Files
You are looking for anything like Cyberlink, Roxio, Nero, Sonic. You might have a burning program installed that you never used and is not set up properly.
The Dimension 2400 we own came with Cyberlink Power DVD to play DVDs and Sonic RecordNow to burn CDs. From googling, I think Sonic is now owned by Roxio. That might be what is causing the problem. Note: I've experimented once on that computer and I believe I was able to burn data using XP's built in burn ability. I have not used MWP nor Sonic RecordNow on that computer.

The other two in the house, which belong to a relative only have CD-ROM drives so no burning software was installed from Dell.

I just looked over your startup list again and Recordnow isn't listed so this old program isn't searching for drivers.

After you post what you have, I'll look over the program on ours and see what settings we have.

    thanks

In my Program Files directory I have:

    Nero
    Cyberlink

Sonic sounds familiar to me. I am wondering if perhaps when I was cleaning up my PC using CCleaner I may have deleted the Sonic app. But I honestlty cannot remember since that was done several weeks ago.

    What version of Nero?
I'll see if I can find a guide for settings.

I know on my non-Dell XP computer, Cyberlink keeps wanting to sell me a full fledged version. Since the OEM version does exactly what I need, I've resisted. What version of Cyberlink do you have running so I can dig around and see if there is a way to turn off update notices for it too.

Notes for me concerning the error from the tray http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315345

person with problem, Roxio never installed
key to look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\UdfReadr

Most of the post were notes to myself. I find it easier to do that than write down somewhere and have to search for possibly very useful info.

I think the problem might be old drivers from a recording program. (From searching it didn't need to be Roxio, so maybe removing RecordNow left some remnants).

Do you know how to create a restore point? If so, I want you to create one then do the following steps:
    1. Search for the following files
    Code:
    cdr*.sys
    2. If one or both of the following appears
    Cdr4_2K.sys
    Cdralw2k.sys
I want you to right-click and select Rename. Change the extension sys to old
    so you will have Cdr_2K.old and/or Cdralw2k.old
    3. Close that box and click on Run then type in regedit and press enter
    4. Look for this
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
and in the right pane, if Upper Filters value is present, delete it; if Lower Filters value is present, delete it also.
    5. Still in the registry, look for this
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K
if present, click edit then select delete
    Look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf
    again click edit then delete
    Last, look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr
    click edit and delete
    6. Get out of the registry by clicking File, then exit
    7. Reboot the computer and the popup from the tray should no longer appear.

If you do not know how to create a restore point, post and ask for help before you try any of the above steps.

To create a restore point: Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.
Fill in the circle at Create a Restore Point. Then you will have a box to type in a name and press create. When done, close out this window.

To see if it was created: click through to the same System Restore but this time, have the circle at Restore My Computer to an Earlier time.

You will see a March 2011 calendar. All the dates in bold, have a possible restore point. If more than one restore point was created, you will see a list in the right pane. You simply click the time that you want to restore to. You can also click cancel to back put of doing the restore. Any time you want to look at possible restore points, you simply go to Sytem Restore and select Restore My Computer to an Earlier time. You can also press the arrow keys on the calendar to go back one or more months and select a restore point, if any are available. (The dates in bold let you know that at least one restore point is available for that date).

Well I finally had a chance to follow the instructions today.

    Set the restore point
Found the Cdr_4k.sys and the Cdralwk.sys files
    renamed them
deleted the files in the registry

    rebooted and voila!
    NO MESSAGES at reboot!

    Thanks for all your help

    easy to follow directions.
The reason I was asking about the system restore was because whenever I used tried to restore to a point in the past, it never resolved my issue. So I assumed I did not set the restore point correctly.

    All is well. :-D
