The Perseids Meteor Shower peaks tonight around midnight. If you have a cloudless night, check it out. There will also be a full moon. If you miss the peak tonight, it'll still be going strong for a few more days.

    Northern Hemisphere, mostly. Midnight:01 EST

Apparently they're called that because the radiant (apparent point of origin) lies in the constellation Perseus. It's associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle and has been documented as observed for about 2000 years.

The shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the peak in activity being between August 9 and 14, depending on the particular location of the stream. During the peak, the rate of meteors reaches 60 or more per hour. They can be seen all across the sky, but because of the path of Swift-Tuttle's orbit, Perseids are primarily visible in the northern hemisphere.

Neat stuff. Hope you get to check it out.

Sounds nice! I went out, heard some yotes in the distance, then a mosquito tried to bite me, I was thinking West Nile, as this is the FIRST one I have seen this year, and went inside.

I have a large light beaming down at me. For those of you who can see it, enjoy, is beautiful. :cool

You're the second person I know that went out and was chased in by a mosquito! West nile isn't that bad. You're not really old or really young, you'll live! Suck it up, man! :p

My brother saw one so bright that he was able to see it through overcast skies. It had a nice reddish tail too. I, for my part, went to sleep :p

I went out but between the full moon and the local lights I could not see anything.
However, next year I am heading for the desert. A few years ago I went to the desert and spent the night and it was worth every minute.. amazing!

I remember the stars in New Mexico. Could not find a radio station to listen to, but I learned what 'starlight' was. :-D
