I don't know how it works in your country (you don't say which) but here in Belgium my ISP has a site for users where you can log in with your password and see at any time how much you have used for the month plus lots of other things about your account.

right-o. Boycotting Time-Warner. I use every bit of my service, while it runs, and I intend to keep it that way.

I pay for 8Gb/s and actually get 7.6Gb/s because the exchange is only over the road.
This service is unlimited but Tiscali do have a fair usage policy. This costs £15:31 a month and i also pay £2:97 a month for Norton internet security.
The service is very good but there customer service is diabolical.

Similar thing over here. But most ISP's have a means of checking your usage on your account site.

Lenny this one allows you as its free to ad an alert notification to when your close to your bandwidth limit per month, http://www.majorgeeks.com/Down2Home_d1704.html ( may need in some cases to got the developers home page an download full version )

I do think as the internet is more easily accessable to all and PCs are reletively cheap these days that metered internet is going to be the norm, luckily my ISP is unmetered at present.

I am no authority on this but if you are downloading from a P2P you are also uploading to others on the site the portion that you have downloaded and as long as you are connected to the site it will continue to upload this is also counted in your allocation of bandwidth.

Yes if your using p2p you will be uploading, however the main part is you will always be uploading some data as soon as you connect to the internet as even clicking a URL is you sending data to ask for the page.
