I've had a search through the forums, but I haven't found the answer, so maybe someone can help.

If I run MGtools.exe on my windows 7 pc I get the following message (which I've had to type out by hand because windows *still* won't let me copy+paste an error message - my windows 7 ad would go something like this: "You know what I want? I want windows 7 to allow me to copy+paste error messages from error dialogues so that I can quickly put them in to google and search for a solution. So, I told microsoft, and look at what they did: F*&k all.")

Anyway, back to the point - the message:
'The program or feature "\??\C:\MGTools\locate.com" cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows. Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Windows compatible version is available.'

So, does anyone have any suggestions about what I may have done wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help.
    Rob

MGTools does run on 64 bit systems. Have you tried running it in safe mode? Have you tried renaming it? You can try this:

Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The red is merely informational.

cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

    Thanks for your reply.

After typing GetRunKey I immediately get the same error message as above in a pop-up. I've attached a screen grab.

    Hi again,

I ran it in safe mode and after renaming it. The same error occured. However, unlike in normal mode where the process seemed to hang after I clicked Ok in the error dialogue, in safe mode the process continued to completion, so I have a bunch of log files.

I understand I need to run GetLogs.bat next. But I'd liike to know if it completed correctly first!

    Thanks.

Can you not just attach the C:\MGlogs.zip?

I am not seeing any malware on your system. However, I am also not seeing any AV software either.

What issues, other then needing an AV program, are you having, if any?

Ok, so I only posted here because of the error dialogue that popped up when I ran MGtools, not because there were any issues with my system.

However, I do have AV sw running, I use ESET smart security. It may not have been running when I generated those log files, as it was run in safe mode due to the problems I had as described earlier in this thread.

The reason I decided to run through the whole malware cleaning process was because my laptop was running slowly, and I just wanted to clean it all up. I'm not certain it is better yet, but it seems to be running quite nicely now.

So, there's 2 things to sort out regarding this thread:
    1. did MGtools run successfully on my machine despite the error message.
    2. is the error message related to my machine only or is there a bug in MGtools.exe

MGTools did run successfully. All the logs were completed. Some AV software will mess with it's ability to run, so I am inclined to think it is an issue with your system. My next question would be can you now run it ( as renamed ) in normal mode.

Did you run the other scans:
    SAS
    MBAM
    ComboFix ??

I followed the Vista cleaning procedure, so I ran SAS and MBAM. I didn't run combofix as I have a 64-bit system.

I will run MGtools again, but I'm just in the middle of something, so I'll do it tomorrow and post the results.

Thanks for your help so far.

Yes, Combo will not run on your system. As to SAS and MBAM, just attach the logs that show infections. Otherwise, I will be here tomorrow to see your results. No problem. :)

Ok, I've re-run mgtools in normal mode. The same error showed up, but after I clicked OK it ran. Screenshot and mglogs.zip attached

I've also attached the other logs. Not too much excitement there really.

Looks good. Tell me what issues, if any, that you are still having.

None really, having cleaned up the machine a bit it is running fine.
The only remaining issue is why does that error dialogue pop up - especially if mgtools runs fine after I click ok.

Frankly, I don't know why you are getting that error message. Chaslang may have an idea, but he is on vacation at the moment. In any case, I would not worry about it. Our main concern is knowing your system is clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
