I had noticed that my wife's family was using Frostwire, and had seen some suspicious software running computer, and had seem some suspicous software installed (such as a rebate finder, some coupon searches, etc). After utilzing the instructions (except for running CCCleaner on one profile I don't have access to), I began experiencing difficulty running the MGTools. I had noted that there were a lot of infections, and RR ran quickly before spewing out a quick list. I don't know why, but I suspect that the info in the RR log may be red herrings. Running XP MCE SP3, MGTools extracted, flashed the console window a few times quickly, but didn't seem to be doing anything productive. I was not able to locate the MGTools logs.

What makes you suspect you have a rootkit?

    1. If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Now try this to see if we can get some logs from MGTools. Without seeing those I cannot work up a full fix for you.

    2. Please do this, click Start, Run and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. In the command prompt window, enter the below commands each followed by the enter key. Note there is a space after the cd

    • cd \MGtools
    • GetLogs.bat

    3. Now attach the C:\Mglogs.zip if you were sucessful.

    4. If you were not successful then please try running MGTools in safe mode, the usual way by double clicking it. (Make sure it is on your C Drive)

Thanks, it was able to obtain the logfiles that way. My suspicion was due to the way that the malware was killing apps, but It was also very late at night. I was also basing this suspicion upon the output of Rootkit Repeal. Here are those logs.

    Let's try again.

    • AVG Free 8.5 <--- outdated, the new version is 9. You can either choose to go with upgrading to this version or you can choose something else from our list of reccommended anti virus which information will be provided about in my final steps.
    • File Helper 1.1.0.4 <--- Did you install this knowingly?
    • Inbox Toolbar <--- Did you install this knowingly?
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11 <--- Outdated, uninstall it
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 17 <--- Outdated, uninstall it
    • Winferno Registry Power Cleaner <--- Misleading application: RegistryPowerCleaner is a security risk that may give exaggerated reports of errors in the registry of the compromised computer.

    1. You didn't disable messenger (just run disable messenger again)

    2. Please go to Jotti's malware scan

(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)
    • Copy the file path in the below Code box:
      Code:
      c:\program files\File Helper\1.1.0.4\FileHelper.exe
    • At the upload site, click once inside the window next to Browse.
    • Press Ctrl+V on the keyboard (both at the same time) to paste the file path into the window.
    • Next click Submit file
    • Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
    • This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
    • Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
    • Once the scan is finished, Copy and then Paste the link in the address bar into your next reply.

    3. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

No site should be placed into your trusted zone.

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    4. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\DIO18C.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\DIO18E.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\MAR18A.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\MAR18B.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\cpbrkpie.ocx
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\xqkcebzs.dik
    c:\windows\Tasks\RegPowerClean.job
    c:\windows\Tasks\RPCReminder.job

    Folder::
    c:\program files\Winferno
    c:\program files\Free Offers from Freeze.com

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    5. Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    6. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    7. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

I recall now why I thought I had a rootkit. AVG was not letting me kill the processes. Below is my progress:

    * AVG Free 8.5 <--- outdated, the new version is 9. You can either choose to go with upgrading to this version or you can choose
•Shoulda caught that, cause I just installed it on my sister-in law's UMPCS
•Install gets killed when I try to uninstall norton2006 (not installed to my knowledge) I attached a copy of the log file if it's worth anything, but I had to compress it as .7z then .zip.
•i installed after a few attempts. still gave a warning about NAV, but it's in.

    * File Helper 1.1.0.4 <--- Did you install this knowingly?
•Not my computer, but I did found this suspicious. An extended Google search session brought nothing, so I let it go.

    * Inbox Toolbar <--- Did you install this knowingly?

•Again, not my decision to install. Don't personally like having it on here, but it's their computer.
    e
    * J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11 <--- Outdated, uninstall it
    •Thanks, done

    * Java(TM) 6 Update 17 <--- Outdated, uninstall it
    •This too, thanks

    * Winferno Registry Power Cleaner <--- Misleading application: RegistryPowerCleaner is a security risk that may give exaggerated reports of errors in the registry of the compromised computer.

•I missed that one, there were lots of rogue apps on this machine.

    1. You didn't disable messenger (just run disable messenger again)
•I have run it again. No bells and whistles here. You have an easy way to check this without running MGTools?

    2. Please go to Jotti's malware scan

    * Press Ctrl+V on the keyboard (both at the same time) to paste the file path into the window.

•Not sure if it's a firefox issue, but you gott browse for it.

    * Once the scan is finished, Copy and then Paste the link in the address bar into your next reply.

    •Filehelper:
    •Inbox Toolbar
    -http://virusscan.jotti.org/en/scanresult/c41461e67a64b043fea0f7ad635a83917bbb7a2e

    Quote:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {1CB20BF0-BBAE-40A7-93F4-6435FF3D0411} - (no file)
    •Ran without error

No site should be placed into your trusted zone.

    O15 - Trusted Zone: www.disney.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: www.nick.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.webkinz.com

•Physically removed this at the beginning of this messge.

    4. Now we need to use ComboFix
•Not exactly sure if this ran correctly; somewhere near the end, the system had either restarted or logged me out. When I logged back in, the system began its startup routine while building the logfiles.

    5. Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6
    • ran without error

    6. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.
•Seems to have run without errors.

Messenger is still running according to the HJT log and the Runkeys.log

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

You need to uninstall the below if you are opting to stick with avg:

    • Norton Internet Security

Then after uninstallation via add/remove programs you will need to run this:

Please give the Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) a run > reboot your machine and then run it again for good measure.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this so I can see that all traces of Norton are gone, and then I will be giving you final steps if you are not having any malware problems now.

That disable messenger tool did not work at all. I had to use C:\MGtools\analyse.exe to remove this.

    • Norton Internet Security

I ran this twice as advised. I had no idea that Norton had been installed at all until AVG 9. Must have been removed in the past and this was the remnants.

Also, I'm checking with my siblings in-law, and have found that File Helper 1.1.0.4 and Inbox Toolbar may not have been installed purposefully; this was probably a piggyback install. I have one more person to check with before confirming that they need to be removed.

    Here's that log you wanted.

Then get them to unistall the below:
Also fix this line with HJT the way you did for the messenger line.

Now use Windows Explorer to find and delete a directory like the below if it exists.

    C:\Program Files\Rebate Informer

Then let me know how that went. I will be giving you final steps soon.

This went well. After discussing the applications with my in-laws, they all had no idea how they got there. I am actually one step ahead as I had completed these actions while waiting for you to respond.

That's great. Then you are in good shape! :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks. Their system is running much better.

Interestingly enough, when I ran the uninstall for combofix, the following apps were detected by AVG:

    C:\32788r22wjfw\iexplore.exe
    C:\32788r22wjfw\n.pif
    C:\32788r22wjfw\nircmd.cfxxe

I went ahead and quarantined them, but the CFXXE leads me to believe that they were from combofix.

I appreciate the tips to avoid malware, and practice many of them myself as I am becoming A+ certified. I'll forward the information to the family so that they can be better prepared.

    You're welcome :)

Yes what AVG found was just related to combofix, so no worries there.
