Any ideas? Everything is set to full in the recording area in the sounds and audio devices in control panel.

i have seen over the years, some connecting pins on the microphone are not compatible with some soundcards.

the pin is sometimes too short

Also, make sure the microphone is not muted. I sometimes forget to flip the switch that is between the microphone and the plug. Well, not anymore since I've fooled myself so many times, but I used to. :)

I think it might just be the cheapo microphone that I bought, everything's on full. It works fine when we use Teamspeak when gaming but skype and msn it comes out really quiet.

u can actually use your headphones as a microphone! just speak into the earplugs!

Not all headphones because most are only designed to output sound, not input it.

No, technically all headphones can do it. They just transfer electrical signals to a vibration at the speaker. It can also work in the reverse. (Although not very efficiently) You make vibrations on the speaker with sound waves and it gets transferred to electrical signals.
