Microphone stopped working (not a hardware problem!)

    Hi there,

    I have a P4 2.8Mhz with 1GB RAM PC.

My microphone has stopped working - I use it for video-phoning with Skype or MSN. There's no crackling / feedback / popping - not a flicker of sound. I've been into the mic setup options dozens of times, and it doesn't pick up a trace.

I'm currently using a microphone from PC Line, but I have several others, so I have tried swapping out and they've all stopped working - leading me to believe that it's the PC that's the problem.

It first went wrong using Skype - I've heard a rumour that one of their updates muddled up the ports on the PC so it no longer knows where to look for the mic?

Can any kind soul give me some hints on how to get the PC to recognise the mic port again?

    Many thanks in advance.

That's a pretty good troubleshooter, thanks. It's fixed now, there was a weird setting under the advanced options in a different volume control tool to the one I was using under 'control panel'.
