Just a question really.... I'm running Microsoft Anti-spyware on two pc's and i'm almost certain it is this particular program that is causing slow start up's on both pc. Is this a common problem or is there something that I should set and haven't, or should I disable the 'real time' portion of the program?

    Any response would be welcome.

    Many thanks guys.

Ok, thanks for responding. I disabled the 'real time protection' on one of the pc's, and that has certainly improved. I'll do the same on the other.

This is not really a good idea. It defeats the purpose of having a spyware blocking tool.
Yes it will slow down your PC. So does an antivirus program and so does a firewall. But that is necessary in order to protect you. Are you going to disable your antivirus and firewall too? So unless you have other spyware blocking software in place, I repeat, this is not a good idea.

There is a ton of bad stuff out there. Not blocking them from getting into your PC and only scanning after they are on your PC is like buying car insurance after you had the accident.

If MS Antispyware is slowing you down too much, check out other applications like:

    Spy Sweeper
    CounterSpy

I hear what you're saying. Microsoft Antispyware is slowing start up a lot, i.e. once pc is up and running, it can be 10 mins or so, before anything will run properly.

Out of the links posted, is there a preference?

    Thanks

Spy Sweeper, assuming you don't mind paying (both Spy Sweeper and Counter Spy are not free). MS Antispyware was free (at least right now). Spy Sweeper has a trial version. See how it works on your PC. You will find that each application you use will have an impact on system performance. You cannot avoid this. How much is the question. Everyone has a different CPU speeds and different amounts of memory. So trial version can be useful to see how it performs on your PC.

Another very good program is: Ewido security suite This is a 15 day trial. After that you must pay.
