Everytime I go to windows update, or microsoft.com I get a page not found, I can surf anywhere else, but anything microsoft related I cannot get to, I am trying to download the latest DirectX for my Windows XP SP3 & Radeon X1950 Pro, but fail, whats up with that.

    Hi

Microsofts website is fine today, do some cleanup steps and use CCleaner to delete temps and cookies and then try again, if still not working one thing to suspect is malware and run the Read and Run me guide in the malware forum and then start a thread in that forum with attached logs.

Try another browser and see if you get the same at microsoft sites, Opera or Firefox will do to test with.

Also what security applicatiosn do you have installed? please name all.

Directx latest version is here at Majorgeeks

That link you gave me for DirectX returns with a "Server not found" in FireFox, Cannot find server in IE aswell using IE thats in SP3. Also using latest FireFox, cannot connect to anything Microsoft related in either browser, but other sites work fine.

Scanning my system using Windows Defender now, see how I go..

Currently have no firewall installed, nor anti-virus, downloaded Avast Home though, will install shortly. Also I enable Windows Update, but after a re-start it is disabled again, thats weird, this is a clean install so I can't work out whats the go, I have only been to and downloaded drivers and apps from official websites... strange.

Whats the best program to see if I have a trojan or something blocking me from accessing microsoft.com?

    Hi

The Read Me guide in malware is best option to check for malware.

Quick thing you could try is to open up your HOSTS file and see if its different to this one.

to open HOSTS its in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\ then right click it and choose open and a windows of options will pop up choose notepad (dont tick the always use box tho) and check if their is any difference to the above default list and more so for 127.0.0.1 microsoft.com

Ping microsoft.com and see where the ping dies.

It could be the route is simply down due to server/router issues on the backbone, or ISP end.

    Then its a dns problem.

You can try via IP, but otherwise, look at the stickies in the malware thread, and call your ISP and see if there is a problem on their end with their dns servers.

Or, you can try google dns.

    http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/

    IP for ms is 207.46.197.32.

Its not a backbone issue, most likely. Backbones look fine today.

Not when you look here, no.

If your ISP cannot even get any type of resolution, its not the backbone. It should make at least the hops through their end before leaving out to the backbone. Its your ISP, or its your machine.

If you feel confident its not your machine, then there ya go.

I have found and started to download a mirror for the latest DirectX runtime, however I cannot find an alternate download location for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, they only offer the service pack for 3.5, Not the actual latest full download, I have downloaded dotnetfix of Net 2.0 and installed that, however I would like to download the latest FULL net framework. But all links lead to Microsoft.com which I cannot access, I really think it's ISP related becuase I have no problem accessing any other websites. (touches wood for luck)

Well I just downloaded IE8, google version, installed alright, but it had an X for checking my comp for malicious software on IE8 install. After restarting my computer and then trying microsoft.com once again, no diffirence, it asks to check & detect my connection, however it fails, yet I type in majorgeeks.com and it loads fine, type in any other site besides MS and it loads without a hitch, this is very strange indeed!

I cannot be arsed doing a fresh format and trying once again, I highly doubt this fresh install is somehow corrupted, becuase all I have downloaded & accessed are driver related content from their respective manufacturer's websites.

Touch wood, but I have not had the system do weird things since installing the much newer VIA Hyperion Pro drivers from VIA's website, instead of the original older ones that are recommended on ASRocks site.

Wish me luck, I`m going in!! :-D

I copied all my downloads across to D:\ and did a clean format and install to C:\, Microsoft.com now working, and installing drivers and apps from my D:\ downloads. Avast is finding trojans, spyware and virus's galore! :-o

Now the only thing that seems wrong is when I click on My Documents, it goes to "C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\My Documents" Instead of "C:\Documents and Settings\David\My Documents"... I dunno why that is.... strange!

It fixed itself somehow, I dunno, maybe it had something to do with windows critical update, because now it is reverting to the proper path. I can access microsoft.com without a hitch, I`ve moved 4 virus's & trojans so far, from files I downloaded on my last clean install, thank you in advance to those who suggested a full reformat, disconnecting the internet, installing only required drivers first, then anti-virus, then critical windows updates, then programs, works like a charm! :major
